During the Spanish–American War, the United States captured Guam from Spain, and on 11 Apr 1899, under the Treaty of Paris, Spain officially ceded the island to the United States. Over the next 40 years, Guam was overseen by a series of U.S. Naval governors (29 official and 10 acting). Then, on 8 Dec 1941, just hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Guam was captured by the Japanese, who held the island until American forces recaptured it on 21 Jul 1944. Once back in American hands, Guam had three more U.S. military governors, followed by seven appointed American civilian governors and four short-term acting-governors.
The first elected governor of Guam was Carlos Camacho, who took office 4 Jan 1971. Since that time, Guam has had a total of nine elected governors, including its first female governor Lou Leon Guerrero, who took office in 2019.
