In 1846 the U.S. Army invaded and occupied New Mexico until 1850, when it was made an official U.S. Territory. The first of 18 territorial governors took office the following year. Since becoming a state in 1912, 28 individuals have held the office of governor of New Mexico, two of whom - Edwin L. Mechem and Bruce King - served three non-consecutive terms each. Governors Susan Martinez and Michelle Lujan Grisham are the first and second woman to hold the office, respectively.
