One of the Union army Military Prisons was Gratiot Street Prison.
Location- St Louis, Missouri - a city with Confederate loyalties. .
It held Confederate prisoners of War.
- also reported to be there were suspected disloyal civilians, spies, guerillas, Federal soldiers accused of crimes[1]
Physical location: 1 blocked from in the middle of the wealthiest homes in St. Louis. General Fremont's headquarters in the Brant Mansion. [1]
- Also attached on North was a Christian Brothers Academy. The reported escapes from the prison were from prisoners digging through the wall into that academy. [2] A large escape of 60 prisoners was a tunnel toward the Christian Brothers Academy.[1][3] See Grimes who escaped twice.
If any prisoners escaped, there were many Confederate-loyal citizens who would house them..[1]
One of the below references refers to a person who escaped...[1] Ssympathetic houses, made it easier to make good an escape. A safe hiding place could be found often as near as half a block from the prison.[1]
Most of the dead prisoners were buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. [1]
The location is now the headquarters of Ralston-Purina.[1]
