About The Grave Guardians

Join the Grave Guardians on a journey through history as we honor and preserve the legacies of those who came before us. Formed in preparation for the April 2024 Connect-a-Thon, our team is united by a commitment to safeguarding the stories held within the world's cemeteries.

In fields of stone, stories untold,
Whispers of the past, in names so bold.
We, the guardians, keepers of lore,
Honor each memory, forevermore.

As Grave Guardians, our role extends beyond simple cemetery research and documentation. Our mission is to be the caretakers of history, connecting families, and bringing to light the narratives that might otherwise be forgotten. Through careful documentation of cemeteries and burial sites, reconnection of family units, and telling the stories we find along the way, we help to keep the legacy of our ancestors alive.

All participation is welcome, whether you're an experienced genealogist or just beginning to explore family history. Every member of our team plays a role in connecting the present with the past.

Our Methodology: A Whole Profile Approach

Grave Guardians take pride in our commitment to leaving profiles in better shape than we found them, no matter which Thon we are participating in. Our methodology goes beyond simply connecting and sourcing profiles, documenting burial sites; we strive to enrich each profile we touch.

  • Comprehensive Connections: We not only add missing relatives with one valid source but also strive to add additional family members, document burials, and provide multiple sources for each added relative.
  • Error Correction: We proactively identify and rectify any errors on connected profiles, ensuring that the information presented is as accurate as possible.
  • Profile Enrichment: Beyond basic connections, we enrich profiles with additional information such as biographies, photographs, and historical context, making each profile a richer source of information for researchers.

By taking a whole profile approach, we honor the memory of our ancestors and contribute to the collective knowledge of the WikiTree community.

How to Join

Joining the Grave Guardians during a Thon is a simple process:

  1. Look for the Registration Post: Before each Thon event, keep an eye on the G2G forum for a registration post.
  2. Submit Your Comment: Submit a comment on this thread that you want to join the Guardians.
  3. Flexibility in Participation: Remember, you have the flexibility to choose your team for each Thon. If you wish to explore different teams or return to the Grave Guardians for another event, you're welcome to do so.

Hello teammates! I asked in G2G if we could get the Grave Guarding image on our sticker and Sayers-1556 created one. Love how it looks.

Hello Dawn,

I agree - that's a great sticker! Can you please show the code for me, or let me know where to find it. Perhaps others will need it too.

posted by Robin (Dodge) Shaules
Every time I do it only shows the sticker. Does anyone know how to place the code it in the comments without it becoming a sticker? Robin, I sent it to you in a message, hopefully it will show the code.

I think that this was never resolved. I expect the person to ask would be Steve. I'll ask him and let you all know. I'm not very good at coding. Hopefully, I'll get back to you all soon.

Robin, Thank you for checking into this!

This sticker should be fine. It is using Template:Recognition_Sticker.

Trying to add it where the comments section will show the code:

Della, I am sorry for not relying sooner, I am just now seeing your comment. I see Steven replied. I couldn't figure out how to show the code either without it appearing as a sticker. I ended up sending it in a message to Robin.

Didn't think to post it like Steven did.

Dawn, thank you for the response!

Hi Everyone,

We all did a great job this weekend, thank you. We hope you had fun. The total for the event was 88,908 profiles added to the tree. We appreciate your fab input and support for the event and look forward to working with you all again next time.

Thanks again for this weekend. On behalf of everyone in the Mighty Oaks Team

Janet, Joan and Maddy

I'm sorry I did't get to parcipate in the connect-a-thon. We had severe storms with flood warnings around here and lots of flooding. I live at the bottom of a hill near a creek (across the street). The creek was had swift water and our yard was complete mush .. our sewer backed up 2 weeks ago and again last Wednesday or Thursday (so tired now, cant remeber) The plumbing company came out twice and got the laundry room cleaned up and disinfected on Sunday. Again, apologize for not participating. At least the basement didnt flood, that would have been devastatling!

Pam, we missed you! But it's good that you are safe. I hope that things are clearing up for you now.

We hope that you'll join us next time!

This was my first Connect-a-Thon, and I tried to live up to the 'Whole Profile Approach'. I lost exact count, but I believe I added about 30 profiles and my CC7 count went up about 100. I was able to join the Discord site and watched some of one of the recorded updates from Sunday morning It was amazing to hear that the top contributors were well over 1,000 profiles at the time.

I was able to find a connection tracker at https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ConnectaThon/202402/User.htm which lists me at number 458 with 29 new profiles (16th of 27 on our team). I'll try to do better next time!

Thanks to the Karen, Steve, and Robin for starting the new team!

We're glad that you joined us. It sounds like you did a great job and enjoyed yourself. If you want to see how you did within the Grave Guardians go to https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ConnectaThon/202402/TeamAndUser.htm. The team was in 17th place - pretty good for a brand new team in a group of over 40 teams! So you can scroll down there and see yourself amongst the other Grave Guardians.

We hope that you'll join us again in July!

I guess I wasn't added to the team, but looks like you have a great group. I didn't get a follow up email so will try again next time.

I can't seem to connect to the Discord Page.
Katrina, you might check the WikiTree help page on Discord, but for technical issues logging in to Discord itself you might need Discord's Help Center.

I click on the invite, and it says I'm not allowed?
Congratulations on the formation of the new team. It is great that it is open to all skill levels and has a whole profile approach!

How do the time zones look running west to east? I figured I would leave UTC firxt and then add British Summer Time and other zones east of Eastern on the right as needed. Am I crazy?

is there is a "list" to work from or should I use the list from my previous team?
posted by Kathryn (Nass) Penner
Thanks for asking! It seems that our Find a Grave related suggestions would be a great place to start. I've asked Captains Steve and Robin about this. I'll find us some links now, and the others can stop by to edit or set us straight. :-)

There is also a "Connect-a-Thon Quick Reference" at the top of the page that has some ideas on lists members can work from.
