History

The following text - to be edited and condensed later - is from the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador.[1]

"A resettled fishing community located in a small harbour protected by Great Jervis Island near the northwestern entrance of Bay d'Espoir, Great Jervis was also known as Great Jervois, Great Jervais and Man-of-War's Harbour."

"Newman and Company based at Harbour Breton, Fortune Bay, built "several fine vessels at Great Jervais, which were highly commended by Trinity House for their excellent models and staunch construction, all constructed out of timber obtained in Bay Despair" from 1815 to 1817. The earliest settlers at Great Jervais were probably brought to the harbour as fishing servants of the Newman company. The settlement was first recorded in the Census in 1836 with a population of nineteen in two dwellings."

A school was built at Great Jervis by 1872 but there was great difficulty obtaining a teacher for it. A Roman Catholic church was also erected in the community of 121 people by 1874. John Penny of Ramea had become the resident merchant with premises in the settlement by 1870. The settlement reached its peak population in 1874. From 1884 (when the population amounted to ninety-six) to 1935 (when the population numbered seventy-four), the population of Great Jervis slowly declined as residents sought employment and services in larger centres on the south coast of the Island or in mainland Canada and the United States. Great Jervis was resettled between 1961 and 1966 under a Federal-Provincial assistance agreement through the Department of Fisheries. Residents of Great Jervis resettled at Pushthrough."
