Greenup County, Kentucky is a part of the United States region known as Appalachia. Generally speaking, the area surrounds the Appalchian Mountains, but it is primarily defined by culture and economics.

Native American Heritage
Greenup County notes the location of Shannoah, a Shawnee Indian village that existed on the south bank of the Ohio River. The area has also been known as Lower Shawneetown. [1]
