Notes
Departure
The last loading date of the Griffin in London was the 20th of July, and so is the earliest date the ship could've set sail. For the other bound, we observe that when Martha, wife of John Smith, sent her letter from Salem to Richard Craven, she was unaware that he had died on 14 August 1675. So the ship must have left prior to that date. A departure sometime in late July seems plausible.
Arrival
The date of arrival of the Griffin given in the Salem meeting records is the 23rd of the ninth month (November) 1675. However, this date doesn't make sense for at least two reasons. The first is that the date of Fenwick's first purchase from the Indians, given as either 8 October or 17 November, means they must have reached the Delaware River before this. The second is that the letter of Martha Smith from Salem is dated 22 November 1675 and implies that they had not only arrived in the colony but had been off the ship for some time--long enough to build a first makeshift dwelling and acquire some animals.
Why the Salem meeting records settled on 23 Nov 1675 is unclear, but the closeness of that date to the date of Martha Smith's letter is intriguing. Perhaps memories were mixed up, and this was actually the date the ship left the Delaware River to return to England (possibly stopping in other colonies first)? In her letter, Martha says "I having this opportunity, took it, to let you hear from us..." Was the opportunity the fact that the ship was about to set out tomorrow on the return journey, giving Martha her best, and possibly only chance to get a message back to her sister in England? This is only speculation, but the idea would seem to make sense.
