About Posey County, Indiana
Posey County is the southwestern-most point of Indiana, bordered on the south by the Ohio River and the state of Kentucky - and on the west by the Wabash River and the state of Illinois. The county was established in Nov 1814 in the Indiana Territory. Indiana became the 19th state in Dec 1816.
Gwaltney spelling variants
Gwaltney is perhaps the earliest American spelling of a wide variety of surname spelling variants. The current theory is that all of these spelling variants are based on a single paternal line, but there isn't yet Y-DNA evidence to support this.
Most of the early Gwaltney settlers of Indiana are found in Posey County. The related Gwartney surname variant is found mostly in Harrison County (further east along the Ohio River).
Pre-1850 Gwaltney marriages in Indiana
The state of Indiana maintains a searchable database of pre-1850 marriages.[1] Of the 18 pre-1850 Gwaltney marriages found in Indiana (after duplicate removal), 14 took place in Posey County.
As a sidenote, 21 of their Gwartney cousins were married in Harrison County, IN before 1850. There were also about 10 Gaultney marriages in Knox Co, IN and 1 Galtney marriage in Greene Co IN.
