I was born in 1956, in Warrington, to Frank and Eileen Hughes, the youngest of 4 children. I went to school in Thelwall and Lymm and on leaving started work as a library assistant in the medical library of the John Rylands University of Manchester Library. I loved the work, but left when public transport issues made it difficult to keep to my hours. My next job was a Bond Clerk with Gilbert and John Greenall Ltd. in Warrington, an interesting post where I assisted in preparing paperwork exporting and importing wines and spirits around the country and the world in general.
Whilst still working there I married my teenage sweetheart, John Taylor and left when our baby was due. A few months after his birth we relocated to Colwyn Bay in North Wales, where John's parents also now lived and where I had spent all my childhood holidays and most weekends at the family caravan.
Once our son was in school I went back to work part-time, having a short time as secretary at a Llandudno hotel and then a bookkeeper for a local building company but finally becoming secretary at a farm with a caravan park. I worked there for 13 years but before I left, returned to my first love and took on relief library work in the local public libraries, eventually gaining a permanent post as a part-time library assistant and ending as a senior library assistant running a small public library single-handed until my early retirement at the age of 56.
