Description

On the evening of the 23rd of March 1944, a 17 OTU Wellington took off from Silverstone airfield for an evening cross country training exercise at 1915hrs. Whilst over the Northallerton area, control of the aircraft was lost after the port engine failed and the aircraft went into a dive. While trying the pull the aircraft out of the dive the aircraft proceeded to break up and crashed into the ground around 2105hrs near Little Beech Hill, west of Osmotherley. Tragically, all six airmen were killed in the crash[1]
