The Calcutta sailed from Portsmouth on 26 April 1803, carrying 307 male convicts, some with their families. The intention was to found a new colony in Bass Strait, and the convicts were landed at Port Philip on 16 Oct 1803. Unable to establish a settlement there, and after an excursion party found conditions no better in the north of Tasmania, the ship sailed for the River Derwent where the fledgling settlement of Hobart was already underway.[1]
