Hancock County History

Hancock County was formed in 1844, from parts of Claiborne and Hawkins counties. Some residents of Hawkins county sued to block its creation. But in 1848, the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of the creation of Hancock County. Hancock County is named after John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress and first signer of the Declaration of Independence.

  • The Greene-Jones War, the largest family feud in Tennessee, began in December, 1887.

Geography

Hancock County is part of East Tennessee, one of Tennesee's Three Grand Divisions. These divisions are not only geographic, but also cultural and defined in state law. Hancock County is also part of the Central Region of Appalachia.
