Haviland Cemetery, Town of Harrison, County of Westchester, New York State
The Haviland Cemetery is an old burying ground in the beautiful suburbs of Harrison, NY. I had some trouble finding it in early 2003 and had to seek assistance from the City Hall, but when I finally discovered it I realized that half the problem is that the sign post had been knocked over and was lying on the ground, face down, on the other side of a rock fence. The cemetery itself is obscured from the road by some hedges that have been deliberately planted there. It sits on the Northwest side of Pleasant Ridge Rd. in between the intersections of Sterling Rd. and Woodlands Rd., and is situated in a thicket between two large houses. None of my direct ancestors are buried here, however.
The fallen sign should be redone anyway, because the hinged section on the bottom is not correct. It reads "1st Burial 1783 Bart. Haviland". It is likely that someone, without looking closely at the gravestones, mistook a record saying "b. 1783" as being buried in 1783. In fact, Bartholomew (son of William Haviland & Elizabeth Gedney) was born 9 Jan 1783 and died 28 Oct 1851. He is buried here, but he was not the first. The first might be his uncle, John S. Haviland, who died 26 Oct 1826. There is a very old tombstone here that clearly has John S. Haviland on it, but the rest of the writing is warn away. It stands close to his grandson, John S. Haviland, who has the tallest tombstone in the small cemetery. If, however, this is not the same John S. Haviland, then Bartholomew's own father, William, is the next oldest burial, who died 24 Jun 1834 and whose tombstone is just about unreadable.
The "est. 1842" on the sign is the date on the deed where William Haviland deeded the property to his son Bartholomew Haviland and others to formally establish it as a burying ground, even though family members were buried there earlier.
Information written in RED below indicates that I'm guessing the identification of the grave or I couldn't identify it at all.
Thanks to Albert Smith, Linda Bohrer, and Shirley Curts for helping me research these Havilands.

Restoration 2018
This cemetery underwent a major restoration in 2018. Fortunately for the cemetery and the descendants of it's "inhabitants", Eagle Scout candidate Milo Haviland, Troop 2 Mamaroneck, undertook the cemetery as his Eagle Scout project. Milo assembled a team of volunteers, coordinated with the City of Harrison, the Harrison Historical Society, and nearby landowners.
