Transcript of will of Francis Heathcote

Anno Domini 1619 Aprill 13 In the name of God Amen. I Francis Heathcott of Chesterfeild within the County of Derbie yeoman being sicke in bodie but of pfect memorie doe make my last will & Testamt after this manner following. Inprimis I bequeathe my soule into the hands of god my maker and Redeemer, and my bodie to be buried in the Church of Chesterfeild. Item I give fortie shillings by yeare for ever to be paid out of my lands unto the Vicar of Chesterfeild and his successors for preaching two Sermons in remembrance of mee with prayse unto god for it, th'one upon the Feast of St Michaell Th'archangell & th'other upon the Annunciacon of the blessed Virgin, at w'ch two times my will is that the preacher shall receive the said somme of Fortie shillings by equall portions at their hands who have the said Lands in possession, and if the Vicar bee noe Preacher then the lecturer shall have it. Item I give for ever out of the said Lands, fortie shillings yearly unto the repayring of the Church of Chesterfeild and especially for the steeples breche alwayes to be paid unto the Churchwardens of the towne in the behalfe of their Layes & Charges thereunto. Item I give for ever out of the said lands and namely out of that house where now Francis Webster dwelleth being the street called Knivesmithgate three Pounds yearly to the poore to be distributed by the overseers th'one halfe upon the feast of St Michaell Th'archangell & th'other halfe upon Th'annunciacon of the blessed Virgin immediatly after the sermons aforesaid. Item I give Twentie Markes out of my goods towards the repayring of the Organs & Tenne Pounds to the Corporation besides that w'ch is oweing unto mee, and twentie shillings towards the repayring of the Causey in Saltergate: Item I give Twentie strikes of Wheate and three Pounds in money to be distributed amongst the poore in Chesterfeild by their overseers within one moneth after my decease. Item I give out of my goods and Chattells fortie and foure pounds to my sister Margret, and thirtie pounds to my brother George, and to my brother Thomas I give Twentie pounds with a redde Cowe and those goods nowe in my Custodie w'ch formerly have beene his with my best Apparell and best Cloke but one: Item I give the one halfe of that w'ch was my wives Apparell to be distributed by myne Executor unto my poore kinsfolke all the linnens onely excepted. Item I give unto my mother Renshawe the best Gowne or Petticote, w'ch she will, that was my wives: and to Elizabeth the daughter of Thomas Turner tenne shillings with the best hatte but one, and an Apron, a partlett and a Croscloth w'ch were my wives. and I give the rest of my wives apparell to my three breethren and my sister Margrett with seaven silver spoones equally to be divided amongst them, and I give that Cofer wherin those spoones are unto my sister Margret with all therin except the spoones Item I give to John Spawforth a Cowe and a Calfe with a strike of Wheate: And to Anthony Spawforth ten shillings and a strike of wheate. And to Richard Webster waller tenne shillings and a strike of wheate. Item to John Denbie tenne shillings and a strike of wheate to be paid by two shillings in the weeke And likewise soe much I give unto Robert Denbie to be paid by two shillings in the week in like manner. Item I give to Elizabeth Hall fortie shillings and all the Clothes or goods which I have that were her mothers. Item to Anthony Hall and Hugh Hall I give five shillings a peece and unto Widowe Sutton five shillings. Item I give to all the poore housekeepers betwixt Robert Denbies house and Widowe Tetlies house a strike of wheate apeece and some three hoopes at the discretion of myne Executor and overseers of this will and testamt. Item I give to Widowe Tetley tenne shillings and a strike of wheate and also the uppermost roome in the house w'ch I buylt over against Durant Hall towards the Crofte and the Corne sowen therin wth the Croft it selfe durring her naturall life: Item I give unto every godchild an Ewe and a lambe, and to every brother and sisters child an Ewe & a lambe wth twentie shillings a peece besides. Item to Widowe Ragsdale tenne shillings and a strike of wheate. Item to every Uncles & Auntes childe at Ecclesfeild or elsewhere tenne shillings apeece. Item I give to George Heathcotts wife myne Aunte five shillings & a strike of wheate. Item to my father Renshawe fortie shillings. And to his sonnes Francis Thomas and George twentie shillings a peece. Item I give to Mr Francis Beveridge and Hemsley wife tenne shillings a peece. Item unto Raphe Clarke and Raphe Renshawe tenne shillings a peece. Item unto George Youle and his wife tenne shillings a peece and every one of their Children twelve pence a peece Item I give unto Helen Ashe in liew of that twentie pounds w'ch I had wth her the somme of thirtie pounds an Ewe & a lambe, some clothes w'ch were my wives and a payre of silk garters Item I give unto Alice Bland sixe pounds for that heyfer w'ch I had wth her. Item I give unto myne Apprentice George Brelsford my lease of the shoppe in the shambles wth those tooles therin and his Indentures and I forgive his father all that hee oweth mee. Item I give to my servants Richard Flint and Alice Godlie tenne shillings apeece if they be wth mee untill my decease: Item I give unto William Heathcott the sonne of John ? pounds. Item I give unto Thomas Ashe & William Sterndall twentie shillings a peece. Item I give unto every one of John Ragsdalls Children a noble a peece. Item my Will is that Francis Webster and his wife shall have their house & grounds w'ch they hould under mee at this present paying the same rent hearafter w'ch now they doe making their choyce any time within this yeare whether they will have it during their naturall lives & the longer liver of them two or make out their lease now in being thirtie one yeares yealding and paying still the same rent I have to myne Executor or Assignes and debts betwixt us I forgive. Item I forgive all debts under tenne shillings. Item my will is that those w'ch are not able to pay their debts shalbe forgiven th'one halfe therof and if any Controversie arise hearby my will is that it shalbe referred to the Executor and overseers of this my last will & testamt whether they be able to paye or not. Item my will is that non shalbe sued wthin halfe a yeare after my decease if they will paye three ptes of the due debt. Item I forgive Mr Waddington three pounds in respect of the tithes w'ch were due unto him from mee the last yeare and Ester last and at all other times untill this present unpaid and forgotten. Item I give unto Mr Brakes tenne shillings. Item my will is that there shalbe foure grave stones carved and laid over the place where my father mother and wife lyeth and the place where it is intended god prmitting that my bodie shalbe buried before Christmas next following. Item I give to Mr Gibson five shillings and to tenne scholers twelve pence apeece for singing before my Corpse to the Church the same daye wherin it shalbe interred. Item I give to Mr Boote fortie shillings. Item my will is that there shalbe fifteene pounds in the least bestowed at my funerall. Item I give to John Denbie my courser suite of apparell with stockings and shoes. Item I give to my brother Tupman my gowne, and his sonne Antony my best cloke. Item I give to Thomas Lannder tenne shillings. Item to Mr Boler tenne shillings. And I make my brother Godfrey Heathcott onely Executor of this my last will and Testament bequeathing unto him all things unbequeathed after that my Legasies be given, funerall expenses discharged and this my last will and Testament truly pfourmed. And lastly I make Mr Thomas Heathcott and Mr Mathew Waddington supvisers of this my Will and Testament, givinge unto them twentie shillings a peece thearunto and to all things contayned in this will setting my hande and seale the day and yeare above written.
