SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE. ARRIVED (Hobson's Bay.) October 8— Henrich, (Hamburg) barque, 280 tons, C. Spieler, from Hamburgh, via Adelaide 29th ult. Passengers, cabin : Messrs C. S. Brooke, Plumbeck, P. Tesscn, Shwennesson, and 12 in the steerage. Mollcnbeck and Co., agents

The Ship

The Heinrich was built in 1841 (Bark "Heinrich" (160 L.) erbaut 1841 bei Sager in Vegesack, Kapitän M. Klencke)[1], at the peak of D.H. Wätjen & Co.'s growth. Between 1838 and 1883, the fleet of Wätjen ships grew from 14 to 43 ships and four steamboats[2]. The original owners were D.H. Wätjen & Co. of Bremen.[3]. The ship was named after the eldest son of C. H. Wätjen, Driedrich Heinrich, born in 1840.

Technical details (translated from German):

  • Heinrich, Barque
    • Builder: Sager
    • Owner: D.H. Wätjen und Co., Bremen
    • Launched: 16.08.1841
    • 107 CL / 240 RT, 27.2x 7.5 X 4.3 M

From 1842 until 1848 the Heinrich was a packet-ship between Bremerhaven and New Orleans, then between Bremerhaven and New York. Previous captains were M. Klenke (1842-46) and Erich Wieting (1846-49).

In 1851 the ship was sold to shipping agency Biancone & Co[4]. That same year the Heinrich sailed with a load of emigrant passengers from Hamburg to Rio de Janeiro and then from Rio to Port Adelaide under Captain C.H. Boye.

By 1856, when the Heinrich was due to depart Hamburg for South Australia, the ship had changed hands again and was owned by Knorr & Holtermann, who already had a good reputation for cheap passenger travel to Canada[5]

Thanks for your kind comment! I looked at a couple of the other active ones to see what looked like useful info. I know the Heinrich made a few voyages so I hope to track those...unfortunately being a very common men's name at the time it's very hard to google! If you want some help with researching the Iserbrook voyage give me a shout and I'll see what I can offer. I know a bit of German which has been useful so far.

Thanks Tracy for providing a good example for Prussian ship free spaces. The list in the Prussian Immigration Ships is very useful and looks comprehensive, but I think there are a few gaps. One of my ancestors migrated in an 1861 voyage of the Iserbrook.
