Research Question

The goal of this project is to identify the father of Henry Hays, 1808-1888.

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Julie (Hays) Bartimus. Henry was my 4GGF. If you are interested in helping with this research question, please post a comment or send a private message.

Summary

Two family bibles and a biography of a son indicated that Henry Hays was born on August 30, 1808, in Maryland. Henry owned land in Washington County, Maryland. He moved to Ogle County, Illinois in 1854 and lived in Pine Creek township (Polo) until he died. He died on December 19, 1888, in a train accident, having lived 80 years.

The earliest record for Henry is a transcribed index of marriage records indicating he married Sarah Eakle in January of 1832 in Washington County, Maryland.

See Henry Hays profile for his full biography and sources. None of the records found list Henry's father. The next step is to analyze prospective fathers from online trees and identify additional prospects from Washington and Frederick County, Maryland census records.

Research Plan

John Hays who married Catherine Eakle in 1825

  1. "John Hayes (1784-Deceased) Profile," FamilySearch Family Tree (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/changelog/MGFH-QCB : accessed 17 February 2023).
    • The tree lists John Hayes (1784-Deceased) and Katharina Spessert (1784–1870) as the parents of Henry Hays. However, there is no source documentation listed to support these relationships.
  2. "Married," The Torch Light And Public Advertiser (Hagerstown, Maryland), 18 Jan 1825, p 4, col 1; digital images, Newspapers.com (https://www.newspapers.com/clip/8296479/marriage-announcement-of-john-hays-and/ : accessed 17 February 2023), "on the 4th inst. By the Rev. Mr. Reedy, Mr. John, aged 19, to Mrs. Catharine Eakle, aged 45, all of this county."
    • This is a secondary account of a marriage between John Hays and Catherine Eakle. While it supports their marriage, it occurs well after Henry Hays' birth in 1808.
    • It is believed that Catherine Eakle is the widow of Amos Eakle and Henry's mother-in-law.
    • While John Hays could be related by blood to Henry, if the reported age is correct, the groom is more likely an older brother and a cousin to Henry.
  3. "Maryland County Marriages, 1658-1940," database, FamilySearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org : accessed 22 Apr 2018), John Hays and Catherine Eakel, 3 Jan 1825; citing Washington, Maryland, United States, clerk of the circuit court from various counties; FHL microfilm 14,643
