Return to Stout Name Study

This is a page to collect together in one place everything about the Hezekiah Stouts and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

To Do List

1) Upload and attach images of documents (or simple PDF descriptions of the documents if they are copyright protected) which are being used as source materials. Attach these to the profiles you believe these documents relate to. This inevitably will result in a single document being attributed to multiple people.

2) If a source is contested, add the reasons why each individual is represented by the source.

Mysteries and Confusions

Please help me the disagreements:

  • Crux of the disagreement. There is a missing generation. It is proposed that in the book, that Hezekiah Stout (1788-1859) is said to have been a son of Hezekiah Stout and Mary Powers, although research of Patt Seitas indicates that Hezekiah Stout was born before the Stout/Powers marriage and further other records relating to his siblings -- Daniel, Thomas, Samuel, and Charity -- establish he was the son of a Sarah and Hezekiah Stout. So, my theory is that if there really was a "Sarah Cline" that married a Hezekiah Stout, she married the Hezekiah Stout who was omitted from the book and who was the father of Daniel, Charity, Hezekiah, Thomas, and Samuel.
  • It is purported by that Charity Stout may not be the daughter of Hezekiah Stout Jr.
  • Kerry Combs states:
The Hezekiah that married Mary Powers is son of Benjamin Stout.
  • This record 1792 Harrison County Tax listshows that there are two Hezekiahs and it states clearly on the tax record one is the son of Johnathon and the other the son of Benjamin.
  • It is disputed that Johnathan and Hannah Jewell had a son named Hezekiah
which is supported by four sources: Stilwell, Nathan Stout, Roberta Fuller and Russell Ray Stout. (unverified)
  • It is purported that Johnathon (m Jewell), Benjamin (m Hannah) and Hezekiah (m two widows) are brothers
  • It is purported that the Hezekiah who married Margaret McCaully in 1801 is Hezekiah son of Benjamin Stout and Rebecca Doolhagen.
  • It is purported that Hezekiah husband of Sarah (Cline?) is son of Jonathan and Hannah Jewell Stout and that this Hezekiah was with Sarah in around 1800, 1804, (proven with deeds) and he signed the marriage bond for daughter Charity and James Maze in 1802.

From: patt seitas<pseitas@abac.com >  Subject: Hezekiah Stout (1788-1859)  Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1999 20:06:55 -0800

In my posting on the ancestors of Sylvanus Stout, I stated Hezekiah Stout, jr. (1788-1859) was the son of Hezekiah and Sarah Stout.

Most researchers have stated he was the son of Hezekiah & Mary (Powers) Stout. Someone asked me for my reasons for this change. I'm going to explain my reasons. If anybody can poke a hole in my theory, or has additional information, I would like to hear from them. My reasons:

(1) Hezekiah, jr. is the brother of Daniel (1777-1838), Thomas (1792-1859) and Samuel Stout (d. 1823). This is established through the will of Daniel Stout which mentions his "brother" Thomas (Lewis co., WV Will Book B, pp. 29-30), the will of Thomas Stout which refers to the widow of his "brother" Samuel (Will probated March term 1859, Gilmer co., (W)VA), the obituary of Thomas Stout that states he was the last of four brothers who founded the Stout Settlement in Lewis co., VA (now Stouts Mills, Gilmer co., WV) (Weston Herald, 28 Feb. 1859, reprinted June 1933, Weston Independent); the 1820 Lewis co., VA census, p. 152 which shows only 4 Stouts in Lewis co. (Hezekiah, Daniel, Thomas and Samuel), an 1806 Harrison co. deed purchase by Hezekiah Stout of property that became Stouts Mills (Harrison co., WV Deed Book 6, p. 189) and Hezekiah's will which established he owned this property at his death (Gilmer co., WV Will Book 1, p. 26, posted Gilmer co., WV GenWeb page).

(2) The mother of Daniel Stout was "Sary Stout" who signed the consent for his marriage in 1800 in Harrison co., (W)Va. (Harrison co. Marriage Book 1, p. 389.)

(3) The mother of Samuel Stout was more likely than not Sarah Stout, wife of Hezekiah. A tombstone in the T.M. Marshall Cemetery in Gilmer co., WV for Sarah Stout, wife of Hezekiah, died 1823 was erected in 1909 by "A.S. Stout" in memory of his grandmother. "A.S. Stout" is probably Absalom S. Stout, a son of Samuel Stout. The tombstone is not for a wife of Hezekiah, jr. who was married to Nancy Wolfe from 1807 (date of marriage in Harrison county) at least through September 1833 when Nancy personally acknowledged a deed from herself & Hezekiah, jr. to their son, John W. Stout in Lewis co., (W)VA (Lewis co., WV Deed Book E, p. 265.)

(4) Hezekiah, jr. was not a product of the Hezekiah Stout/Mary Powers marriage. They were married in October 1789 in Harrison co., (W)VA (Harrison co., WV Marriage Bond Book 1, p. 68); Hezekiah, jr. was born in 1788 (1850 federal census, Gilmer co., VA, 17th District, p. 7, fam. no. 97 (age 62); Feb 1859 obituary, Weston Herald (age 70)). Hezekiah, Stout, sr. and his wife, Sarah, were married at the time of the Stout/Powers marriage as shown by: a September 1789 deed for the sale of property in Augusta co., VA by Hezekiah Stout and his "wife," Sarah, "Late of the County of Augusta;" 1796 Harrison co., (W)VA deed by Hezekiah and his "wife" Sarah (Harrison co. Deed Book 2, p. 458).

In sum, based on the assumptions that Hezekiah was born before the Powers/Stout marriage and that he was the brother of Daniel, Thomas and Samuel Stout who were the sons of Sarah & Hezekiah Stout, therefore, Hezekiah was also the son of Sarah and Hezekiah Stout.

From: patt seitas<pseitas@abac.com >  Subject: Birthdates of children of Richard Stout  Date: Fri, 27 Nov 1998 16:02:25 -0800 (PST)

The birthdates of the children of Richard & Penelope seem like they would provide clues to the birthdates. In my next posting, I've posted the birthdates of the 1st four children of Jonathan & Anna (Bollen) Stout as listed in the Middletown town records. Can anyone else provide primary source dates from the children of Richard & Penelope's children?

Monmouth co., NJ town land records also might provide some clues to the birthdates of the children of Richard & Penelope.

Does anyone know at what age a person became a "freeman" or adult in NJ in the 1600's? Was it at age 21? or at 18 years? I think it was 21 years.

The Grants and Concessions for Middletown (Lib. 3, East Jersey Deeds, A side, p. 1, quoted in Stillwell, John E., "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany Eary Settler of New Jersey and their Descendants, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD (1970), Vol. IV, pp. 302-303) indicate:

"Before January, 1665, i.e., between 1664 and 1665, To every freeman (he or she) and for his able bodied man servants, if equipped, going from the port with the Governor, properly equipped, each 150 acres; and for weaker servants or slaves, exceeding fourteen years, each 75 acres; and the Christian servant, at the expiration, 75 acres.

"To any master or mistress going before January, 1665, 120 acres, and to every able bodied servant taken with them, 120 acres; and for weaker servants, i.e., over fourteen years, each 60 acres; and to Christian servants, upon the expiration of their time, each 60 acres.

"Between, January 1665, to January 1557, To every free man or woman, 60 acres acres, and to able bodied servants, 60 acres; to weaker servants, 30 acres, and to Christian servants, upon the expiration of their time, 30 acres."

"1675. Here begins the Rights of Lands due, according to the Concessions.

". . . . . . . . . .

"Richard Stout brings for his rights, for the year 1665, for his wife, two sons, John and Richard, 120 acres each, total 480 acres.

"Items for his sons and daughter yt come voyge (sic) since the year 1667, namely, James, Peter, Mary, Alice and Sarah, each 60 acres; total 300 acres.

"John Stout, of Middletown, for himself and his wife, ... 240 acres.

"Richard Stout, jr., of Shrewsbury, for himself and wife, 120 acres.

"James Stout for his owne right 60 acres.

"Peter Stout for his owne right 60 acres.

"Sarah Stout for her owne right 60 acres.

"James Bowne, in right of his wife, Mary Stout, 240 acres.

"John Throckmorton, in right of his wife, Alice Stout, 240 acres."

Stilwell concludes Richard, Penelope and their sons John and Richard, jr. came to NJ in 1664 while the other children remained in Gravesend until about 1667. Stillwell, then goes on to state (p. 303):

"Richard Stout's application for land was recorded in 1675, in which he lays claim, in right of himself, wife and children for 780 acres, i.e., 120 acres, each, for himself, wife, son John and son Richard, who were master, mistress and able-bodied servants, (not necessarily twenty-one years of age however), settling on the land before January, 1665, and 60 acres, each, for his children, James, Peter, Mary, Alice and Sarah, who voyged thither, about 1667, and who were classified as free men and women, arriving between January 1666 and 1667. If they had settled on the Monmouth Tract with their father, prior to 1665, they too would have received this same amount of land, 60 acres, each, as weaker servants being over fourteen years of age, but the record expressly states from 1667, and the matter of their birth is not involved if the word voyge is read as travel, rather than age, as has been done heretofore. The younger, known but unmentioned, children are evidently under the age of fourteen in 1675, as they had not reached the period of being classified as 'weaker servants,' which had they been, would have entitled their father, Richard Stout, to additional lands at thirty acres per head, and for proof of which he put in no claim."

From: patt seitas<pseitas@abac.com >  Subject: Corrections to Stout & Allied Families  Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 16:46:29 -0700

Here are some corrections to Stout & Allied Families (S&AF):

E 5-52-11 BONHAM STOUT, son of 4-52-1 Jonathan Stout. According to S&AF Bonham Stout first married on 24 Mar 1785 Sarah Finely in Harrison co., (W)Va; second married Ann Fair on April 11, 1805 in Harrison co., (W)VA; 1811 Was in Green co., Ohio. Served in War of 1812 with Capt. Lemon's Detached Militia; returned to Harrison co., W.Va; later moved to Savannah, Mo. and was buried in DeKalb co., MO. near andrew co. line. S&AF lists two children by the second marriage.

CORRECTION: The first marriage to Sarah Finley seems to be confirmed by Harrison co., WV records (see posting on USGenWeb site for Harrison co.). The other information appears to be erroneous; the information must relate to a different Bonham Stout. This Bonham Stout died around 1791. There is an inventory of his estate dated March 1791 in Harrison co., WV Will Book 1, p. 44. There is also a marriage record in Harrison co., WV indicating his widow, Sarah (Finley) Stout, remarried in 1792. (See entry for Sarah Stout below.)

Does any one to whom the rest of the Bonham Stout information applies? Could it related to a Bonham Stout, son of E 5-52-12 Thomas Stout & Margaret (Phillips) Stout?

SARAH STOUT (no number assigned) According to S&AF, Sarah was the daughter of Jonathan Stout (E 4-52-1, b. 1715, d. 1811) and married on January 2, 1792 James Malone in Harrison co., (W) Va.

CORRECTION: Sarah Stout was not the daughter of Jonathan Stout. According to the marriage bond record for the Sarah Stout/James Malone marriage, Sarah Stout was the "late widow of Bonham Stout, Deceased." (Harrison Co., WV Marriage Bond Book 1, p. 123, FHL film no. 0,847,273.) I conclude this is the marriage of Bonham's widow, Sarah (Finley) Stout and not a Sarah Stout, daughter of Jonathan.

PRISCILLA STOUT (no number assigned) Acording to S&AF, Priscilla Stout was another daughter of Jonathan Stout (E 4-52-1) and married John Murphy on 14 Aug 1800.

CORRECTION: The Harrison county, (W) Va marriage bond records indicate Priscilla was the daughter of Sarah and James Malone. (Harrison co., WV Marriage Bond Book 1, p. 392; FHL film no. 0,847,273.) I conclude this was the marriage of the daughter of Sarah (Finley) and Bonham Stout. Note in the statement by Sarah and James Malone giving their daughter permission to marry, she is listed as "Permilla Stout."

Additional information: By deed dated Sept 3, 1804, "Precilla" and John Murphy sold 100 acres at Simpsons Creek, in Harrison county, (W)Va, land originally patented by "Precilla" and Margaret Stout, to Charles Catherwood. (Harrison co., WV Deed Book 5, p. 466.)

Does anyone know who is Margaret Stout?

Patt and others,

Gravesend Town Book, Volume I, Sept 12, 1648 tells about Penellopey Prince and the cow. If this is Penelope (Van) Prince Stout, wife of Richard Stout, than the frist child could not have been born until 1649. That would make John and Richard Stout no older than 16 and 15 years old in 1665 when Richard Stout purchased land in Monmouth County, NJ.

Middletown, NJ town book Richard and John Stout are listed in 1667 - if their parents were married in 1649 they would be 18 and 17 years old.

"Richard Stout brings for his rights, for the year 1665, for his wife, two sons, John and Richard, 120 acres each, total 480 acres."

The Middletown, NJ town book (reprinted in Stillwell, John E., "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany Eary Settler of New Jersey and their Descendants, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD (1970), Vol.---, p. 149 et seq.) might provide some clues to the birthdates of the children of Richard & Penelope. (First page number is number in the Middletown town book, second page number is in Stillwell)

Dec. 30, 1667 (p. 1, 150) In the division of town and field lots, only Richard Stout and John Stout are listed.

Dec. 12, 1670 (p. 31, 166) "John Throcmorton and Alice his wife (after legall publication) were this Day coupled toghether in marriage by Edward Smith Constable."

Jan. 12, 1671 (p. 40, 170) "John Stoutt and Elizabeth his wife were this day: Coupled toghether in marriage by John Bowne: Justice of the peace."

VA(now WV), many researchers try to link another Charity Stout to James Maze, but she was the daughter of Ezekiel Stout. I have traced the Stouts back to England, but in VA(WV) I lose him. I want to find the right one who is my Charity's father & perhaps who was her mother. You can E-mail me direct if you want. Thanks Susan

Hezekiah Stout's dau, Charity Patt (View posts) Posted: 23 Feb 2001 2:12PM The marriage bond agreement for the marriage of Charity Stout and James Maze was signed on 7 Sep 1802. The bondsmen were James (x) Maze and Henry (x) Depues(?). Charity is identified as the daughter of Hezekiah Stout. Hezekiah Stout gave his consent to the marriage (very faded); it appears he signed with his mark and his statement & that of the marriage bond were witnessed by Benjamin Wilson.

Charity's brother, Hezekiah Stout, jr. (1788-1859) sold land for a saw mill to Charity's son, James Maze on February 4, 1847 in Stouts Mills, Gilmer co., (West) Virginia.

Do you have information as to Charity's approximate birth year?

Patt

Charity Stout susansnider48 (View posts) Posted: 23 Feb 2001 2:38PM Edited: 29 Jun 2001 1:18PM Pat; I am researching my Maze line, Big Jim Maze is a double link in my family tree. Charity was born @1783. I know Big Jim built a sawmill at Stout's Mill in 1830, the Stout's already had a grist mill. The name stuck, it is still called: Stout's Mill,Gilmer Co. now West Virginia.Bill Stout has the lineage of her family, he posted here and I responded, too many researchers tried to link her to other Stouts, such as Ezekiel, (wrong), another Hezekiah, not him, finally I found the link through Bill. Thanks for your info, hope this helps you, if not contact me at my E-mail: snider_susan@hotmail.com

Re: Hezekiah Stout's dau, Charity Patt (View posts) Posted: 21 May 2002 1:39PM Classification: Query Note that Sarah's surname is an educated guess based on researchers wrongly ascribing a "Sarah Cline" as a wife of her son, Hezekiah,jr. (1788-1859). While there were other Clines in the Harrison/Gilmer county, WV areas where Sarah lived, I don't believe there is any documentary evidence showing that her surname was "Cline."

Dave,

Thanks for forwarding the message. I'm descended from Perry's brother, Samuel.

Oh, I think I've found another error in Stout & Allied Families which may effect the Benjamin & Rebecca (Doolhage) Stout to Hezekiah & Mary (Powers) Stout to Hezekiah & Nancy (Wolf) etc. Stout line. I think the father of the last Hezekiah (I'll call him Hezekiah, jr.) may not be the son of Hezekiah, son of Benjamin Stout. I think Benjamin's brother Jonathan Stout (m. Hannah Jewell) had a son named Hezekiah and that Hezekiah, jr. is this Hezekiah's son. I note that one of the tithable lists for Harrison county, Virginia (1792) lists two Hezekiah Stouts and notes one is "Jonathan's son" and the other is "Benjamin's son." Stout & Allied Families I think has confused Jonathan's brother Hezekiah (who married two widows) with Jonathan's son Hezekiah. According to records from Hopewell, New Jersey, the Hezekiah who married the two widows (Jonathan's brother) never moved to Virginia; he died in Hopewell, New Jersey.

I believe this Hezekiah Stout, son of Jonathan Stout, married a woman named Sarah and that she is the Sarah Stout, wife of Hezekiah Stout who is buried in the T.M. Marshall Cemetery near Stouts Mill, Gilmer co., WV. There is a deed record in Harrison county from a Hezekiah & Sarah Stout.

Enough for now.

Thanks again for the forward.
