Hulton of Farneworth, (Vis. of Lancs., 1567)

Pedigree of Hulton of Hulton Park

Medieval

Bleythin de Hulton desc.

"The first recorded Hulton to live in Lancashire was Blethyn de Hulton, who emigrated from North Wales in the second half of the twelfth century after Owen Gwynedd had successfully expelled Norman and English settlers from the region. Blethyn's son, Jorweth, was granted by charter the town of Penelton by King John in 1199. The family quickly expanded its influence locally, and in 1304 Richard de Hulton held parts of Hulton, Ordsall, Flixton and Heaton. The same Richard also built the first Hulton Hall, establishing the family seat on the Hulton Park estate, which consisted of 325 acres of parkland located approximately five kilometres south-west of Bolton. However, Richard's grandson, also Richard de Hulton, squandered much of his family's estate and died in poverty without an heir."[1]

Does anyone have access to a copy of the original or a Transcript of this Will - 1578: William Hilton of Shipbrook, husbandman.[97][98] ? The Parish of Davenham is historically a Part of the Barony of Shipbrook which no longer exists, including the Castle on the River Dane. The Lords of this Baronial are well known as well as it constituent parishes of which Davenham is one, and immediately borders the Old Baronial Castle. The Hilton's are well documented at Both Parishes. Ralph Bostock created a series of Transcript Summaries for these Parishes which he published on Yumpu. Ralph is a descendant of the Noble Bostock Family from which Bostock Parish git its name.

There is a William Hilton recorded in a 1548 Muster Roll for Shipbrook and is quite likely the same William Hilton in this will. We need to see the Will or a Transcript of it to progress our research. Shipbrook was dominated by Vernon's and other related families, but the John Savage, Knight, whom married last Heiress Dorothy Vernon Ca 1470 is the Key Lord impacting our Hilton Tenancy in Shipbrook. His son, John married Anne, daughter of Ralph Bostock. The Savages were intermarried with and junior to the Stanley's, whom were Earls of Derby. The Stanley's and Savage's were Lords of Shipbrook Barony from 1470 on. In 1485 both families supported Henry Tudor, Duke of Lancaster against Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth, which Ended the Wars of the Roses. This is a short summary which will be written up and posted separately at the Hilton Research Space. These Families and Events are essential for understanding how our Hilton Family began their Tenancy at Shipbrook and exactly when that could have occurred. The Stanley's and Savages acquired many new lands from Henry V as Rewards for their supporting him. They already controlled Shipbrook before these last Battles. They absolutely had to reorganize their holdings, but that is a story for another day. There has been some significant new Y and AU Genetic Evidence of Matches between The Hilton Kinsman of Cheshire and Hilton and related Families in Lancashire near Hulton Park, Westhoughton, Legh, Farneworth, Bury, Radcliffe and Pilkington, among other places. This dates to the 1450's. There will be separate posts on that but not today. We have a lot of work tracking down different trees. Some are different surnames from these same towns including Baxter, Wearing and Oldham. The Significance is that we know our Shipbrook -Davenham branches of the Cheshire Hilton's are DNA Matched to the 1450's near WestHoughton, Hulton Park, Leigh, Farneworth and Pilkington. These families married into the Savage's & Stanley's and the Pilkington's lost many estates to Stanley and Savage in 1486-87. I propose our Hilton's (likely a younger lesser un-propertied son) departed as Tenants in those Manors and we're recruited by John Savage or his high retainers to be Managing Tenants of Savage at Shipbrook. John's Illegitimate son, George Savage was the Roman Catholic Minister for Davenham Parish during this time period. Remember this is just a working theory with some Circumstantial Documented Evidence which is the best we have to start with. We need to build on this in Lancashire and especially at or near the Barony Of Shipbrook. Discovering more sources but especially the contents of this Will and it's Probate will help. This William whom died Ca 1578 is likely the 3rd Generation of Hilton's there at Shipbrook, son of an Unknown, whom I have Nicknamed "Shipbrook" Hilton, whose name I hope we can discover in some original source later. "Shipbrook" and siblings would be the Child of the Savage Retainer (Soldier) Immigrant from Lancashire whom I nicknamed "Lancaster" Hilton. He came from Lancashire but I chose Lancaster because he was rewarded for supporting his House Of Lancaster Lords, possibly as a Pikeman or maybe on a Horse. From what documents I have seen, they were Middle Class Husbandman likely responsible for Farming Savage's Lands and Livestock, later branching off into endeavors like Salting, Fishing or Lumbering. I am looking for any existing records of Savage's properties, as well as those of families they intermarried with including Leycester's whom leased Salt Houses in 1559 at Northwich to George and Ellyn Hilton of Davenham Parish. We can hopefully locate his Will or Probate. Gratia shows up as a Female Hiltons Name and may be a clue to "Shipbrook" Hilton's Origins in Lancashire. Lots of opportunities here to search out. Let's keep looking, Cousins!
