The goal of this project is to ..research each city, finding the "Settlers of the day" 1927 and linking them and their stories to " John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. February 27, 1902–December 20, 1968) dubbed it the Mother Road. Other designations and nicknames for the highway include the Will Rogers Highway and the Main Street of America."

"US 66 served as a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s"

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Carole Taylor.

Beginning

"Route 66 was one of the original highways in the United States Numbered Highway System.
US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year.
The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before terminating in Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km)." [1]
"In 1990, Congress passed the Route 66 Study Act of 1990, finding that Historic Route 66 had become “a symbol of the American people’s heritage of travel and their legacy of seeking a better life.” Consequently, the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program was created in 1999, and the Route itself was designated an All-American Road."

MAPs all the way

Since it is hard to find a map on the internet that will
TRACE the actual ROUTE 66 thru every town and county
we have to go section by section...............

I have 22 map sections that have the name HISTORIC ROUTE 66 I won't download all of them just the important ones like this one............

Historic ROUTE 66 turns into Arroyo Seco Pkwy #10
The map " California 66 to END of TRAIL" goes all the way thru California
HOWEVER', DO NOT take the BLUE line, that is the San Bernardino Fwy #10 that will take you from Santa Monica to Florida...................... and turn right.
follow the north blue pointing line into Pasadena, Arcadia, Azusa, Glendora, all the way out to San Bernardino................ on Route 66, as the song goes, "get your kicks, on Route 66"

The States

  1. Illinois
  2. Missouri
  3. Kansas and yes I found "Rt 66" there... like 11.4 miles to the BORDER
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Texas
  6. New Mexico
  7. Arizona
  8. California,

Thru CALIFORNIA- END of TRAIL to ARIZONA

When you leave Route 66 End of the Trail, 330 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica you do take Colorado Ave. north until it DEAD ENDS (which means the original ROAD was destroyed for the freeways) then you have to turn south on Centinela Ave. then left on West Olympic Blvd right on Centinela Ave again, which takes you to the Santa Monica FREEWAY #10, that turns into the Harbor Fwy #10, which then turns into Arroyo Seco Parkway #10 which ENDS in South Pasadena at HISTORIC ROUTE 66 which will then take you north until you turn east onto HISTORIC ROUTE 66 otherwise named "West Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, California
Route 66 north turns RIGHT onto W. Colorado Blvd.
These are the DIRECTIONS using the maps.com as close as I can understand them.............AND PLEASE try not to laugh, it was not easy finding IT all the way..................

The only change of names from EAGLE ROCK to ARCADIA is East to West/back again when you enter the next town.......ARCADIA has it running right next to the Foothill Fwy... and then right past the ARCADIA Arboretum was the Rancho of Elias "Lucky Baldwin" and then the EVER Popular and world wide known..........

SANTA ANITA RACE TRACK............ at that point it splits one turns into Huntington Dr. and goes WEST. the other keeps going east first Colorado St. then Colorado Pl and then at the SPLIT turns into "Huntington Dr. aka: Route 66" it keeps going straight east through ARCADIA, MONROVIA, DUARTE, AZUSA, (which was talked about in a 1941 movie, where they say, "I'm from Azusa, A-Z U S A") and when it curves south past Irwindale Ave. the name changes to "Foothill Blvd." until you get to Azusa Pacific University, West Campus and it turns south and the name changes again to "Alosta Ave" and goes past the Azusa Pacific University and goes east again into GLENDORA as (Alosta Ave.) HISTORIC ROUTE 66 AND just 1 large block south of 66 is "West Colorado Ave." which is not the Route 66.....
After GLENDORA comes SAN DIMAS which renames it again, Foothill Blvd.--HISTORIC ROUTE 66 it goes under the Foothill Fwy as "Route 66" eastward into CLAREMONT and the Claremont Colleges, as Route 66 into UPLAND and turns into Foothill Blvd again and through CUCAMONGA/ later renamed RANCHO CUCAMONGA. Now under the Ontario Freeway #15 that takes you NORTH to LAS VEGAS Nevada.
Next city, FONTANA, into RIALTO which calls it "US Route 66" and then at the Lytle Creek Basin it turns north and is named "West 5th St. - Historic Rte 66" and into SAN BERNARDINO and the TRAIN YARD..and it ""DEAD ENDS at the San Bernardino Freeway #215..........
However, -HISTORIC ROUTE 66 does make a turn before that, NORTH, onto Mt. Vernon Ave. and takes us up to the #215 FREEWAY and curves west....and turns into CAJON Blvd. [2] which is coming back WEST????????????? Lytle Creek up the CAJON PASS came to another DEAD END at the #15 Freeway and it JOINS............
'AND just 23.7 MILES north on the #15 FREEWAY from CAJON PASS is the other end of "National Trails Road' DEAD ENDS at VICTORVILLE and into .and it gets LOST at the #15 Freeway AKA:MOJAVE FWY #15 BARSTOW FWY
FOLLOW the MOJAVE FWY #15 BARSTOW FWY all the way, keep going PAST PALMDALE, UNDER Roy Rogers Dr. it does get you to the NORTHEAST end of VICTORVILLE and the TRAIN TRACKS.............
STOP at the U of the FREEWAY EXCHANGE at "N D St" which is also known as National Trails Road going NORTH..................it cuts off at "J St." turns right onto Needles Hwy. LEFT at "N. K St." GOES ACROSS the BRIDGE of the Colorado River CALIFORNIA-ARIZONA BORDER as US RTE #95 map attached

thru ARIZONA to CALIFORNIA BORDER

NEXT DIRECTIONS are coming across ARIZONA to get to the above POINT at the BRIDGE of the Colorado River as US RTE #95 map attached
First town after leaving New Mexico into Arizona is LUPTON...............

JOSEPH CITY, and the Navajo/Hopi Crafts and crossing the "Little Colorado River" where Route 66 leaves the #40 and goes into
WINSLOW, as [ "Old Hwy 66 aka: E. 3rd St"
Next interesting spot is the METEOR Crater REST AREA where "Old Rt 66" cuts off to the south so you can take METEOR CRATER rd. south...and it goes back up by the Apache Death Cave and rejoins the #180 going Northwest to Twin Arrows where the 180/ #40............
and then turn straight WEST into FLAGSTAFF, Arizona.....................
Just west of FLAGSTAFF "Old Route 66" splits and heads northwest AKA: Brannigan Park Rd. that just takes a GIANT LOOP north and back DOWN again to the OTHER is also a "Historic Rte 66" that is along the #40............. AND then "E. Old Route 66" aka: Brannigan Park Rd. makes another curve up and is now called Parks Wagon Wheel Rd when it entered "Parks of the Pines" and it drops down to join the #40 again leaving FLAGSTAFF.............
The OLD Route 66 separates again to
enter WILLIAMS, Arizona and the GRAND CANYON ... Route 64 heads NORTH and Route 66 goes southwest.........it goes thru WILLIAMS and then joins the #40 AGAIN.. then it is "HISTORIC E. ASHFORK, Arizona. All of a sudden there is another SPLIT, "W. Old Rte 66" goes straight NORTH and turns west as -HISTORIC ROUTE 66 .....
Then we come to another split, "SIGN ON STREET Route 66" and it takes us Northwest "W. OLD 66" takes us right alongside the TRAIN TRACKS not far north of the #40. but it is "66"
and into SELIGMAN...where there is a "Historic Route 66 Motel" and right past "GRAND CANYON CAVERNS" after that it turns more to the NORTH leaving the #40 AGAIN... and then EAST and south to the town of
HUALAPAI and further southeast to
TRUXTON.............. and SOUTH past the Bureau of Indian Affairs.....
and ANTARES, Arizona..
finally KINGMAN, ARIZONA .............where the "66" Old Route comes SOUTH, where they have renamed it "E. Andy Devine Ave." and out of KINGMAN and it turns SOUTH away from the #40 going thru the heart of KINGMAN to the south end and then it joins the #40. AND THEN "Historic Rte 66" makes a right turn NORTH, leaving the #40 ...and then an immediate LEFT or South turn onto OATMAN HWY. #10 ........... WHICH goes SOUTH/WEST......
NEXT town WALNUT CREEK..............just after leaving Kingman. WHEN I just about think OATMAN HWY. is not where Route 66 goes there is a "Saddle Sore Ranch on Route 66" (milepost 36.5 on Oatman Hwy) Oatman Hwy....making a very curvy road up to SITGREAVES PASS VIEW POINT and past GOLD RUSH MINE. and then turning south EAST to go
into the TOWN OATMAN............ and out straight SOUTH to GOLDEN SHORES and
TOPOCK BAY which is at the COLORADO RIVER and the ARIZONA-CALIFORNIA BORDER.............in the COLORADO RIVER and the #40 FREEWAY aka: "Purple Heart Trail" and goes west into NEEDLES, California, where they change the name to "Blue Star Mem. Hwy." aka:Needles Fwy...........SEEMS to be Needles Hwy. but nothing that says -HISTORIC ROUTE 66 but at least we got back into California............

thru NEW MEXICO to ARIZONA BORDER

Coming from NEW MEXICO WEST towards Arizona...................................
U S Rte 66 aka: 333, travels along side FREEWAY #40 all the way, goes under #40 to go into the town of Monticello. Right in the middle of the ROUTE is a turn off for Route 66 Casino Hotel, RV... etc..further west, on the north side of #40 is "Old Rte 66 Rd." it comes into LAGUNA, where it leaves #40 and is HWY 124 and "New Mexico Hwy 124 US Rte 66" it then meets #40 again and then "Old 66 aka: Cubero Loop" does JUST THAT, loops and returns to 124. It goes thru SAN FIDEL, still heading WEST and thru San Jose RT 66 runs along side #40. We then come to Sky City Travel and the Hwy 117 and exit onto 117 aka: McBride Rd. which goes straight north/west to a big city, GRANTS, which has many stores "Route 66" names.. coming out of Grants, it is now HWY 122... and now we are running along side #40 again. next town is THOREAU. there are: POPLAR ST. Bridge/EADS BRIDGE/MARTIN LUTHER KING/DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER HWY BRIDGE / MCKINLEY BRIDGE /MERCHANTS BRIDGE..........

There is no sign of US Rt 66 anywhere after leaving the BUSCH STADIUM block.....................
So we will have to follow the directions as stated in the STORY below........
Here is the story from wikipedia
Just before going out of the state into Missouri is
The first town, EAST ST. LOUIS, which it states US Rt 66 doesn't go to
This is WHERE the STORY goes.........."the highway originally crossed the Mississippi River at the McKinley Bridge, NOT the POPLAR BRIDGE
"Poplar Street Bridge was opened in 1967 to facilitate I-55, I-64, and I-70. US 66 and US 40"
Leaving BUSCH Stadium it takes #44 PASS the GATEWAY ARCH north then #44 turns into #70 aka: Dwight D. Eisenhower Hwy. turns right on "McKinley ST." which goes across the McKinley Bridge, on the other side it is "Cedar St." going NORTH aka:"Illinois State Rt 3"
and VENICE is on the east side of the highway.................keeps going north and becomes "Lewis and Clark Blvd." it goes on the outskirts of MADISON, not in the town at all............
"This first alignment passed through
VENICE is just east of the river, right OFF MCKINLEY BRIDGE
MADISON, to get to
GRANITE CITY" it leaves Rt#3 and goes east on "St. Thomas Rd." and right on "Chain of Rocks Rd." IS STILL there on Bypass US 66, and there is a "Route 66 Flea Market in GRANITE CITY, Illinois just west of the town of MITCHELL. "Chain of Rocks Bridge Rd." does go into Mitchell and goes east into the next big town of EDWARDSVILLE, which is the home for the SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY.................leave EDWARDSVILLE going EAST on "Vandalia Ave." turn NORTH on "Hillsboro Ave." aka: "STATE 157"
THERE IT IS: "OLD RTE 66" aka: "STATE 157" going Northeast right into
HAMEL, Illinois STAY on 157 "OLD RTE 66" aka: "W. Frontage Rd." ...........it comes up to/parallels hwy #55 northeast. it veers off onto "Possum Hill Rd." which loops into #4
Original route
"IL 4 north of Auburn
"U.S. Route 66 originally followed IL 4 north of Hamel. This alignment navigated through
STAUNTON, (#4 and picks up numerous street names go thru town, comes out as #4) and a "Route 66 Gaming" is still going and #4 takes us to
SAWYERVILLE, and then to the OUTSKIRTS of
BENLD and north into the downtown of
GILLESPIE and goes east and NORTH and then WEST to go into the town of
CARLINVILLE, MACOUPIN COUNTY downtown then north
OFF to the east of #4 is "Turkey Tracks on Route 66" aka: Donaldson Rd. in GIRARD.......
the #4 goes past the Turkey Tracks makes a curve to the EAST ................to go into the next town
NILWOOD #4 leaves Nilwood north and comes into the bigger town of
GIRARD thru town straight NORTH again..............
"The section of US 66/IL 4 from Nilwood to Girard was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 23, 2002.[6] Route 66 continues along IL 4 north
through VIRDEN, next is
THAYER, north to the outskirts, only close not IN town of
AUBURN heads off northeast to CHATHAM
("A section of IL 4 north of Auburn and south of Springfield, which was also part of the original span of US 66, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 1998.[6] This is the last brick alignment in Illinois.")
Route 66 then passed through
CHATHAM,
SPRINGFIELD. (FOUND THIS Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway WAY off to the east of #4 in the middle of the city. AND from the Byway building take "S. 5th St." north to the Old State Capitol.
" Breaking off of IL 4, the route passed the Illinois State Capitol and the Old State Capitol."
FROM there #97 east to #55 NORTH into
SHERMAN northeast to
WILLIAMSVILLE coming out of town we find "OLD RT 66" parallel to #55 and then splits and goes further east to #55 veers around Elkhart
then ELKHART RT 66 goes thru
BROADWELL after Rt 66 goes EAST and is aka: Lincoln Pkwy and into
LINCOLN and we find this "The Mill Museum on Route 66" Route 66 goes on the outskirts of town north and makes a turn EAST and at the north end of town heads northeast again. parallels #55 and into
LAWNDALE out northeast and up into the town of
ATLANTA come of the Paul Bunyan Statue except "OLD RTE 66" bypasses Atlanta totally going northeast and on into
MCLEAN, and a "Historic Route 66 landmark"' AND where the "OLD RTE 66" turns off and onto E. Carlisle St aka: "OLD RTE 66" east and then turns north to run along #55 northeast the next town being SHIRLEY, Dale Township, Illinois it stays "OLD RTE 66" coming into
BLOOMINGTON, and then it joins "S. Veteran's PKWY." and I can still see it.........it turns EAST then north and still "OLD RTE 66" /"S. Veteran's PKWY." / #55 now and then way north of town "OLD RTE 66" CROSSES "OLD US RTE 66" SO we have a choice, NORTH or northeast???????????? Veterans Pkwy turns into Pipeline Rd, no more 66 the northeast OLD US RT 66 has now come along side of #55.......... and we come to the town of
TOWANDA both highways going on the west outskirts of the town. and northeast to the next town
LEXINGTON still ever northeast we see "Historic Route 66 Chenoa IL Parking Lot"
CHENOA is also bypassed, but close........ the next town is way northeast,
PONTIAC it goes straight thru the outskirts of town on the west side. #55 has now been named, Barack Obama Presidential Expwy., and still parallel is "OLD US RTE 66"
next is CAYUGA still northeast to
ODELL Township the next township both #55/ "OLD US RTE 66" outskirt to the west side is
DWIGHT the next township both #55/ "OLD US RTE 66" outskirt to the west side is
GARDNER, Garfield Township, Illinois after leaving to the east "OLD US RTE 66" TOTALLY comes to a DEAD END. at the MAZON RIVER, no way to go unless you know to turn off and get on "Hwy #53 or get on the #55 no mention of 66 again.............after Mazon River is the town of
BRACEVILLE and then
GODLEY and then
BRAIDWOOD, Reed Township a bigger town so we are staying with Hwy. #53 but #55 is not far to the west now the next town is
WILMINGTON, next
ELWOOD next
PRESTON HEIGHTS
JOLIET, Illinois with the Des Plaines River nearby and #54 HWY is now called "S. Chicago St." then it turns into #52......so the direction finder takes us right onto hwy. 80 EAST..........
  1. 80 joins #294 / #5 north into
CHICAGO, Illinois still no "US RT 66" after a cloverleaf around and it comes out #57 going northeast. into CALUMET PARK somehow we are now on I-94/90 going NORTH and now onto the DAN RYAN EXPWY northwest we are close to the Chicago CHINA TOWN and then the UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS CHICAGO
Here is "First Route 66 Sign in Illinois" located at 45-63 E. Adams St. / WABASH and
"The Historic Trio on Route 66"
"Where did Route 66 start in Chicago?"
"U.S. Route 66 begins in Chicago, at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Jackson Street , but it's never been a glamorous thoroughfare here. It runs southwest through the city along Ogden Avenue, before passing through the suburbs of Cicero, Berwyn, and McCook."
SORRY, that is the best maps can do. Chicago does not have anything like Santa Monica California has "Route 66 END OF Trail' or even any of the '"US ROUTE 66" names on a street..

Memories: 1
Enter a personal reminiscence or story.
Does it look more like a genealogy TRIP and fits into the Category: Trails and Wagon Trains, it does take and make over some of the TRAILS "Native American trail, known as the "Osage Indian Trail"." in HALLTOWN" Missouri.

OK, next, make the Category: Trails and Wagon Trains for: "Great Osage Trail" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Osage_Trail as soon as I get through with 66 TRAIL..............
