Introdution and Current Research Focus
Welcome to the Hollenkamp Lineages page on WikiTree. This page is part of the Hollenkamp Name Study project and is intended to provide an overview of the Hollenkamp Lineages that have already been or are being researched here on WikiTree. The current immediate focus of the Hollenkamp Name Study is to identify and describe the male lineages.
We are of course aware, that matrilineal lineages will also need to be investigated in the future. Because of a lack in bandwidth, we have prioritised the research on male lineages. If you are interested to help out, we would very much welcome any support and hence welcome any researchers who are interested in contributing to the female Hollenkamp lineages. Please feel free to reach out to the Hollenkamp Name Study Coordinator as indicated here.
Hollenkamp Male Lineages - Overview
Vollerbe Hollenkamp in Rüssel, Ankum
Rüssel is a hamlet in Ankum, which is a village about 35 kilometers/ 20 miles north of Osnabrueck in modern Lower Saxony, Germany.
In Rüssel, the Chapter of the Cathedral St. Petrus in Osnabrück owned a Vollerbe called "Hollenkamp", i.e. a large farm that could not be separated into smaller pieces. The farmers operating this farm were own to the Chapter and the Chapter had to ensure that a capable farmer was paying taxes and any levies in kind. The farm operator was able to inherit the farm onto his descendants. Usually, this would have been the youngest son, however, if no suitable heir existed, the farm could also have been given to a daughter. In this case, a man with a different last name could marry into the Hollenkamp farm (in German this is called "Einheirat" (from "HinEIN-Heiraten" equaling "Marrying-Into") and continue to manage it with that female heir. He would then change his last name, from whatever his birthname was to "Hollenkamp", the name of his bride and the name of the "Vollerbe". (Side note: Of course, the Chapter got a lot of extra taxes from the groom in this case, but his children would then continue to inherit the farm to the following generation).
Consequently, genealogical analysis of the "Vollerben Lineages" needs to look for such "Einheiraten"-events and create distinct lineages if and when a non-Hollenkamp male married a female Hollenkamp heir and took her last name. From a Y-DNA research perspective, this is important, because each branch would have a different progenitor passing his Y-DNA to his sons.
Here are some consistency rules applied to the "Vollerben Lineages": Identify the oldest male progenitor of a Hofinhaber of the Vollerbe Hollenkamp in Ankum and his spouse to determine the name of the lineage:
- All children of this family are assigned to the same lineage
- All descendants across the Hofinhaber line ONLY (so only the son, grandson, great grandson, etc. who are also a Hofinhaber") will continue to be in this lineage.
- Sub-branches can be created for larger sub-branches.
- Sub-branches have to be created for a new Einheirat, i.e. if an external male creates a new family with a female Hollenkamp descendant.
Rules to create new sub-branches:
- If a female child creates a new family with a spouse and their children carry a different last name, a new sub-branch will be created for this new family and their children
- If the progenitor creates another family with a different female, a new sub-branch will be created for this new family and their children.
- If the progenitrix creates another family with a different male, a new sub-branch will be created for this new family and their children. As a consequence, the progrenitrix will be assigned to two categories, one for each family.
The following table shows further details about the Hollenkamp "Vollerben Lineages" and shows a list of lineages that branch off of it. The lineage structure number system (e.g. 1, 1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, ..., 1.2., 1.3, ...) is preliminary and subject to change as new sub-branches are added/discovered.
Lineage Hollenkamp - Schulte to Brinke, Hagen a.T.W.
Another Hollenkamp lineage starts with Gerdt Hollenkamp who was born about 1625. He first appears in genealogic records in 1651 in Hagen am Teutoburger Wald, a small village and parish to the south of Osnabrück. Just three years after the 30-Years-War, had ended, Gerdt married Anna Schulte to Brinke in 1651, who was the heir of the Vollerbe Schulte to Brinke, a large farm in the "Bauerschaft Beckerode" of Hagen a.T.W. After the marriage, Gerdt took her last name, and all their descendants do not bear the name Hollenkamp. However, since this branch has a Hollenkamp progenitor we would like to include it in the study. While this lineage is very well researched, its presence on WikiTree is still lacking, so the project will definitely want to look at this in the future. If you would like to learn more, please get in touch with the Hollenkamp name study coordinator.
Until we are able to add a table with further lineage information, please look at the following image, which shows a few of the last names that are linked to this Hollenkamp lineage.
Descendants of Gerdt Hollenkamp |
Our research objective is also to link the Gerdt Hollenkamp lineage to the Vollerbe Ankum lineage using yDNA research.
