I've been keeping too much of this stuff floating around in my head so figured I'd see if managing my research with a GTD style TODO list on here might help free up some brain cycles for other pursuits. Not only that, but might help to leave cliff markers for anyone wishing to take up research in the case I get hit by a bus. If this gets too noisy on the Holloway tag, let me know and I'll remove the tag.

Current Research (Next Action Items)

Timeline of Quaker Holloway MM Transfers

The Quaker Holloways out of NJ are pretty well-documented in Quaker monthly meetings and transfers, but there doesn't seem to exist a comprehensive timeline for their movements. Every researcher must dig into the same MM records to reinvent the wheel and potentially create their own model.

We know most of the Quaker Holloways stayed north of Mason-Dixon into Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio while other conflated Holloway lines generally moved southward. For example, there are no less than four Samuel Holloways in that family. Geographical overlap amongst those Samuels with Samuel Holloways from other families is the source of much confusion in Holloway history.

A timeline of who was documented where and when and for how long would go a long way in creating a framework for making sure certain past, present and future claims are congruent with known records. While the current focus is on Samuel Holloways, the construction of said framework should be a living document published in a crowd-sourced space such that it can be extended and revised with as many sources as can be located.

Waiting For

Who is the Elizabeth Holloway that died 4 Nov 1700?

There's an Elizabeth Holloway that died 4 Nov 1700 according to the Charles Parish register.

The only WikiTree profile I've found that could be a candidate is: Elizabeth Greenough Carmack (abt.1640-). The rest of the Elizabeth Holloways in the Charles Parish register (of which there are many) were still bearing children after 1700.

  • TODO: Made contact with Dolores Pringle, but waiting for a response to help understand the depth of her research on the creation of these profiles over 11 years ago.

Someday/Maybe

Anderson Holloway and Susannah Gillespie

This court order 1799 in Mecklenburg indicates that Anderson Holloway's wife Susannah was indeed the widow of a Martin Gillespie.

We know Anderson was born about 1774 due to when he shows up in his father's PP tax list about 1790. FamilySearch has some peculiar data on Susannah that her maiden name was Andersen and that she born 1750 in Edgecombe, NC. It seem unlikely for Anderson to have married a widow 24 years older than himself making him the stepfather of Gillespie children his own age. There are a few scenarios that could make more sense including that there were multiple Martin Gillespies marrying a Susannah or that she was a second marriage for Martin.

Potential John Lea Connections in Caswell, NC and Wake, NC

We have a John Lee/Lea interacting with Holloways in Caswell, NC and another marrying Sarah "Sallie" B Holloway) in Wake, NC. We don't know if they are the same individual, related or pure coincidence. Connecting the two could provide new avenues of research by tracing overlaps with Lea family geographically.

  • TODO: Research and document possibility of it being the same John Lea or related to one another
  • TODO: Reach out to Lea researcher(s) to see if any have already connected these John Leas and/or already explored an allied connection to the Holloway families there

Evidence is surfacing that the Holloways in Caswell, NC were unrelated to the ones trying to be connected here in Wake, NC. There's no definitive proof as yet, but strong enough to put the John Lea coincidence on the backburner for now.

Who are Mark and Catherine Holloway in Surry, VA?

There are a Mark Holloway and Catherine Holloway in the FindAGrave profile of Rebecca (Holloway) Nall (1747-abt.1808) listed as siblings. This family is so unsourced that the Find A Grave profile creates the potential for viral crowdsourcing of incorrect details. Neither one have parish records in York or Surry, VA where we'd expect to find him if they were children of David and Frances. However, the same goes for Lazarus who is commonly accepted as their child.

Mark married Lucy Warren in 1796. It seems more likely that he's a nephew of Rebecca than a sibling. There's an additional connection to the same Warren family via Sarah Warren who married Jesse Holloway, Jr indicating that Mark is a yet undocumented brother.

  • "Virginia, Surry County Marriage Records, 1735-1950," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KCH4-M3K : 9 March 2018), Mark Holloway and Lucy Warren, 09 Dec 1796; citing Surry, Virginia, United States, Register of Deeds, Surry.

Catherine is even more mysterious than Mark at this point.

Who is Herbert Holloway who died 1803 in Prince George, VA, but probate in Surry, VA?

Herbert Holloway seems to be a namesake of a nephew in Surry, VA

Who are Richard A. Holloway and J.A. Holloway who witnessed Silas will in 1859?

These are likely to be nearby nephews or cousins in Surry, VA who aren't direct heirs of Silas

Rebecca (Holloway) Nall (1747-abt.1808)

The Rebecca (Holloway) Nall profile now seems to conform to online consensus, but there are still some issues (documented in the Research Notes).

Free Space Profiles for Holloway/Meador Documents

There are Holloway researchers in the Holloway/Meador line producing swaths of documentation on their line that currently live in static documents transmitted over email. I've volunteered myself to see if there's a way to easily transform that material to free space profiles on WikiTree, but a frictionless path isn't yet clear. The best idea so far is just an upload link where the document is transformed to wiki text that can be posted as an update to the free space profile.

Research Notes (Reference Material)

Holloways in York, VA

Many of the profiles in this line of research are sourced in a private tree on Ancestry by a WikiTree user who hasn't been active in almost two years. I've reached out to see if there are any primary sources to be published that would help strengthen these important profiles.

Holloways in Surry, VA

These Holloways moved to Surry, VA from York, VA and seem to have many allied connections in my line of research.

Completed

20 Aug 2022 Unmerged Matches

The available online sources have been exhausted. It's clear these profiles were referring to the same persons so a merge was the best option to promote further exploration with DNA as to whether Rebecca and Frances are ancestors of William Nall's children.

Frances Holloway (abt.1713-1789)

  • TODO: Determine validity of sources on Holloway-4893 which are currently hidden behind a private tree on Ancestry

Rebecca (Holloway) Nall (1747-abt.1808)

  • TODO: Determine validity of sources on Holloway-3523 which is currently just FindAGrave
  • TODO: Search for any evidence that Rebecca Holloway (1747-) married a William Nall in/around Surry, VA allowing these profiles to be merged.

24 Aug 2022 Clearing up Silas Holloway

There seem to be at least 2 contemporary Silas Holloways who were likely cousins. The WikiTree profiles seem to be on the correct trajectory, but FamilySearch profiles for these individuals are in terrible shape.

Silas Holloway (abt.1780-) of Caswell, NC

This Silas was the son of Obediah Holloway of Brunswick, VA.

There were at least two Obediah Holloways whose lifespan and geography overlapped in NC from different families who as yet seem unrelated so care must be taken to ensure the right Silas is linked to the right Obediah.

  • TODO: Update these profiles with sources and research notes to ensure they are kept distinct from their contemporaries.

Silas Jesse Holloway (1779-1860) of Surry, VA

This Silas was the son of Jesse Holloway (1750-1811). However this profile seems to have conflated two sons Silas and Jesse, Jr. together (both named separately in his Jesse, Sr's last will) as the same person.

This Silas currently has a daughter listed as Willmoth Newsum (Holloway) McCracken (abt.1818-abt.1901). There seem to be two contemporary Wilmouth Holloways. One who married James T. Cox/Cockes and the other who married Thomas McCracken. I don't think they are the same individual with two husbands.

From the brief evidence I've seen, the Wilmouth Holloway from this Holloway family married a James T. Cox/Cockes, not McCracken. The Wilmouth Holloway who married McCracken likely didn't have the Newsome middle name and was from a different line of Holloways whose connection to this one, if any, is not yet known.

This is backed up by "Willy Cockes" being named as heir in Silas' will and other Cockes connections in various records.

  • TODO: Make sure Silas and Jesse, Jr. have distinct profiles and clear up any middle name confusion
  • TODO: Figure out if Wilmouth was the daughter of Silas or daughter of Jesse, Jr.
  • TODO: Make sure the correct Wilmouth is linked and gather evidence to correct the lineage of the other (ensuring the middle name Newsome goes with the right one)
