About the Project
The Holtslag Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Holtslag name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Holtslag name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Holtslag's), by time period (18th Century Holtslag's), or by topic (Holtslag DNA, Holtslag Occupations, Holtslag Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Origin
The origin of the surname Holtslag comes from the Holtslag estate or 'kasteel' in Toldijk, Steenderen. The first mention of this word dates to 1401, in a land register. The first mentions of this as a surname, however, date to the late 1600s. It is believed that children of families who lived on the castle, or possibly bastard sons of the nobility there, spread around the area, reclaiming the (at the time) swampland, and building for themselves properties. These men who settled in the areas of Steenderen, Vorden, Warnsveld, Lochem, Gelselaar, and other areas then gave themselves the surname 'Holtslag', probably originally something like 'van het Holtslag', 'op het Holtslag' or ' t' Holtslag', to name a few.
Meaning
The word 'Holtslag' comes from two words: the Achterhoek-German word 'holt' meaning 'wood'; and the word 'slag', from the Dutch 'geslagen' meaning 'beaten'. The general meaning comes form the reclaiming and clearing of the woodlands in the area to make way for pastures and houses, like the Holtslag estate.
Other places with similar names
Today, the only remaining place with the name 'Holtslag' is the Holtslagweg, a road in Toldijk. There are a few farms and businesses owned by Holtslag in the general Achterhoek area, most likely all related, at least distantly. There is also a farm named 'Holtslag', which was located at today's Polsteeg 8 in Barchem. The farm was founded c. 1600 by the Counts of Limburg-Stirum of the Bronkhorst Castle. This family had inhabited the Wildenborch Castle as well, and they had decided to lease the surrounding plots, to have the forests and marshes cleared for farmland.
Immigrant Holtslags
Hendrik Jan Holtslag (1916-2002) immigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, from Velp, Gelderland via Rotterdam, South Holland, and Freemantle, Australia, with his family in 1962, aboard the Groote Beer.
