Honkajoki (historically, Hongonjoki or Hongojoki) is situated along the Karvianjoki River that connects it to neighboring Karvia, upstream to the northeast, and Kankaanpää to the south, before it flows on toward the Gulf of Bothnia.

History

The oldest evidence of nearby human occupation is "pit-house" at Myllyluoma, along the bank of the Pahaluoma River, a tributary of the Karvianjoki that flows southward from Kauhajoki. This prehistoric site, though to be associated with the Suomusjärvi culture, dates from 6000–6500 BCE when it would have been located along the shoreline of ancient Ancylus Lake[1][2]. In the mid 16th century, there was a small settlement in this area called Hienmaa. About a century later, the Finnish Lutheran church established Jokihongo farm, in the present center of Honkajoki, beginning a continuous history of settlement[3]. Honkajoki became an independent municipality in 1867, until 2021 when it became part of Kankaanpää[2].
