Background
The Hopsewee Plantation was located in the Prince George’s Parish, Winyah, now the area called Georgetown County, South Carolina.[1] The plantation home was built by Thomas Lynch Jr. in the 1740's.[2] His heirs were allowed to have the plantation if they went by the name of Lynch. [3][4] However, Robert Hume seems to have owned it before Lynch Jr. died, as it was written into Robert Hume's will as having purchased the property from Lynch (if Hopsewee was indeed the property). Robert bequeathed this property to his son Alexander, but John Hume seems to have come up with it. Hume died in 1841, and the plantation was sold and Hume's grandson, John Hume Lucas, who purchased it in 1844.[5][6] In 1853 the plantation was advertised in the newspaper for sale.[7]
By 1867 the Hopsewee Plantation was again for sale.[8]
