How To - Add a link to Wikipedia and Wikidata

Here are step-by-step instructions for adding links between Wikipedia/Wikidata and a profile on WikiTree. This is for those who want to directly edit Wikidata. This is optional. You can create a link between WikiTree and Wikidata simply by adding a link from WikiTree. See Help:Wikidata.

If an article already exists on Wikipedia:

1. Get the Wikipedia ID. This is similar to WikiTree in that it comes after the /wiki/ in the URL.

2. Get the Wikidata ID.

1. On the profile page, on the left-hand side, under Tools, select Wikidata Item

2. At the top of the page is the Wikidata ID in parenthesis next to the subjects name (Q####)

3. Enter the WikiTree Person ID statement into the subjects Wikidata.

1. Scroll to the bottom of the list of statements

2. Click Add Statement

3. Start typing WikiTree, select it from the list

4. Enter their WikiTree ID into the available field, LastName-###

5. Click Publish

4. Click on the newly entered WikiTree ID to verify that it goes to the proper profile.

1. Once back at WikiTree and the subject's profile, click the Edit tab.

2. Under the ==Sources== section:
1. Add the Wikidata template {{Wikidata|Q####|enwiki}}
2. Enter a comment into the Explain your changes field
3. Click Save Changes

It should look like this when through:

* I followed instructions for profile of Curtis Mayfield and it took forever using my phone but the links work; the only exception to your example is the final source on the WikiTree page has one minor difference the prefix to Wikipedia "en:" remained when published- but it links to the correct page either way. Is this ok? I can't send private messages using my phone through the website anymore or I wouldn't have posted- no idea why this changed abt 3 months ago.
