The spelling of this surname has so many variations that profiles, including entire family lines, have been duplicated. The earliest profiles tend to use Chilew or Chilewe or Chelew. Other possible transcription errors resulted in Chelue, Chellow and Cillewe. And, most ancestors who immigrated to the United States use Chellew, which was used in Cornish records in the late 1800s. We’d like to use this project to standardize when and where certain spellings changed.

According to a descendant of Mary Wills Chellew the Ch is pronounced like “Shhh”. And it isn’t pronounced like the Ch in “Church”.
