How to Create a Plantation Page

1. Choose a plantation that needs a free space page. You can also find a list slave owners that need plantation pages created here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:USBH_Heritage_Exchange%2C_Needs_Plantation_Page

BEFORE you create the page:

  • Find the slave owner and see if there is an existing profile in WikiTree.
  • The slave owner Is Not on WikiTree - make a profile of the owner with sources about the enslaved, i.e. Slave Schedules, wills, deeds.
  • The slave owner Is On WikiTree without sources about enslaved - get the sources about the enslaved and add them to the slave owner profile.
  • The slave owner is On WikiTree with sources and evidence of at least 40 enslaved that lived on that plantation. Make the plantation page. Add those sources to the new plantation page creation.

2. When you are ready to create the plantation FSP

  • Go to the WikiTree drop down menu, ADD, and then add NEW FREE-SPACE
  • Naming the plantation page is important!!! Please name it in the following manner:
Clifford Plantation, Adams County, Mississippi
  • Next create an Introduction or History about the plantation with all Slave Owners.
  • Add the linked Slave Owner(s)'s Wiki-ID(s) to the plantation within the biographical Introduction about the plantation
  • Add the following Categories above the plantation Biography: USBH Heritage Exchange; (any other USBH Heritage Exchange category that applies); Category:County, State, Slave Owner; AND add the Plantation Category. If one is not made yet, ask for a category to be made and then place it on the page. ---Do not create any profiles until you have this category on the page.
  • Add the information about the enslaved, lists of names, Slave Schedules, etc. into sections with headings, ie: Slaves, Census, Slaves Sold, etc.
  • Remember to add sources where the names, dates and information came from.
  • At the bottom of the page type == Sources == and under that type <references /> (the FSP page does not automatically have that on the bottom).
  • Hit enter and create the page. It can be edited for mistakes, and when new information is available.

3. Add the plantation's space page ID to the slave owner's profile using this wiki code:

[[Space:Faunsdale_Plantation|Faunsdale Plantation]]
  • The first half of the space page ID comes from the last part of the URL while on that page.
  • If slave profiles are being made, be sure to add the slave owner ID, the plantation ID, and the new category for that plantation to each profile.
  • Add slave profile Wiki-ID to where their name is listed on the plantation page
If you have found a slave owner with property and enslaved persons but no plantation name, please do the following:
  • Please try to find a name first.
  • If you can't find it ask for assistance in locating the name. It might be in a will, deed or probate record.
  • If the name can't be located, then name it in the following manner with the owner in the title:
John Smith Plantation, Hancock County, Georgia

Add the new plantation to the Index

Caution: When thinking about creating plantation pages we realize there are a lot of plantation images online. Please remember to ask permission to post images and pictures on your plantation page so as not to infringe on copyright.
