How to find the exact birth / marriage / death date in New South Wales

The New South Wales birth, marriage and death indexes only display the year that the event was registered. These instructions show how to determine the exact date when the actual event took place.

I want to find the marriage of John Ford and Letitia Alton. I know John was born in Kooringa (Burra), South Australia, in 1860, but I cannot find the marriage in South Australia. Since many people from the mining town of Kooringa went to the mining town of Broken Hill in New South Wales, I'm going to search in New South Wales next.

The search engine is located here: https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search?11

1. Select the marriage search.

2. Enter the search criteria and choose a suitable date range. In this case I don't know how Letitia will be spelled in the index, but I want to reduce the number of hits I get from a common name like John Ford, so I will add the bride's surname Alton. I'm going to search from 1 January 1880 to 31 December 1900.

3. The result indicates that the marriage took place in 1892 in Broken Hill. So choose Modify Criteria to return to the search screen.

4. Enter 1892 as the start year and now I will determine the month. I start in the middle of the year, from 1 July 1892.

5. The registration is no longer visible, meaning that the marriage took place between 1 January 1892 and 30 June 1892. Choose Modify Criteria to return to the search screen.

6. Now I'm going to choose a date halfway between 1 January and 30 June, so I'll use 1 April 1892 as my starting point.

Wow, great idea! I knew how to get the birth year but never considered changing the actual search dates to find the right day. I was hoping I could work it out from the birth registration number but no luck there. This is fantastic help so thank you for posting it.
