Surname Variants
Anglo-Norman names tend to be marked by an enormous number of spelling variations. This is largely due to the fact that Old and Middle English lacked any spelling rules when Norman French was introduced in the 11th century. The languages of the English courts at that time were French and Latin. These various languages mixed quite freely in the evolving social milieu. The final element of this mix is that medieval scribes spelled words according to their sounds rather than any definite rules, so a name was often spelled in as many different ways as the number of documents it appeared in. The name was spelled Hodenet, Hignett, Hignet, Hodnet, Hodnett, Hodenett, Hodinett, Hodinutt, Hodinut, Hodinott, Hodinot, Hoddenett, Hoddinet, Hoddinutt and many more. Hudnal, Hudnall, Huchenhole, Hodnel, Odinet, Hoknell, Huckenalle and Huckenhale. The earliest of the name on record appears to be Hochehale who was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and Huckenhale was documented in Derbyshire in the year 1198.
History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms
Hudnall is a name of ancient Norman origin. It arrived in England with the Norman Conquest of 1066. Hudnall is a name that comes from the Norman name Odinet, from which the more commonly known Odo is derived.
Early Origins of the Hudnall family
The surname Hudnall was first found in Shropshire at Hodnet, a village and civil parish in the union of Drayton, in the hundred of North Bradford. The first record of the place name was found in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was listed as Odenet. Apart from the aforementioned patronymic origin, the place name could also mean "pleasant valley," from the Welsh "hawdd" meaning "pleasant" or "peaceful" and "nant," a "glen or valley."
Migration of the Hudnall family to the New World and Oceana
Because of the political and religious discontent in England, families began to migrate abroad in enormous numbers. Faced with persecution and starvation at home, the open frontiers and generally less oppressive social environment of the New World seemed tantalizing indeed to many English people. The trip was difficult, and not all made it unscathed, but many of those who did get to Canada and the United States made important contributions to the young nations in which they settled.

Notes for JOHN HUDNALL: [janet skelton.FTW] (NOTE: The reference to Webb comes from a record of the Sanders family (Mary m (2) Edward Sanders) where an John Webb refers to Capt Edward Sanders as his 'cousin' in his will in 1709. However, this Edward Sanders could very well be the son of Ebenezer Sanders (a son of Edward Sanders by his first wife) and not Mary. Based on the name 'Parrain' appearing in the Hudnall family, it is much more likely that Mary was a Partain. ) 1624 Robert Partain in census. Robert, age 36, came in the Blessing in June 1609 - 162? Robert's wife, Margaret, sentenced to be whipped for concealing evidence concerning the whereabouts of a servant of the Partains who had murdered someone (have to find reference again) - Robert appears in records multiple times (Elizabeth City Co, Henrico Co, Charles City Co) - 1648 Robert, Margaret (wife); Robert, Jr; Avis, Deborah, & Rebecca claimed as head rights by John Seward of Isle of Wight Co (C&P V1) - In 1662, 3, and 4 Mary Partain was claimed as a headright 4 different times (Note: This was not unusual; people were often claimed multiple times. Also, headrights were often granted years after the people were actually imported. 2 Nov 1655 John bought 500a on North side of Great Wicomocoe River in Northumberland Co, VA. (Northumberland Co Record Book 1652-1658 by Ruth & Sam Sparacio (RS2); p56~9) - John referred to as "of Isle of Wight County" - Involved in many other land dealings in Northumberland Co Info below from Barry Riley Records show that William Dawson was granted 1200 acres of land in the Isle of Wright County, Virginia adjoining the land of John Hudnall on Hudnall Creek in the year 1635. This was probably John Hudnall, Sr., and his wife Elizabeth for whom Hudnall Creek was named. It appears that John Hudnall, Jr., also had a brother whose name is not known at the present time. John Hudnall, Jr., is the John Hudnall 1st who moved from Isle of Wright County, Virginia to Northumberland County by 1655, when he bought land from Thomas Saffell. This land was described in "Calvaliers and Pioneers" by Nell Nugent; was on the North side of the Great Wicomico River at the mouth of a small creek formerly called St. Stephens Creek. In 1658 Hudnall was granted an additional 250 acres on the south side of the Great Wicomico River. (His son, John, later sold the land on the south side.) John died in 1659, leaving a widow, Mary and six children. The inventory of his estate shows nothing to give a clue as to what he did for a living, but does reveal that he was a very wealthy man. His estate was appraised at 57.461 lb tobacco and caske. As John died intestate, his land was inherited by his oldest son, John Hudnall, II. Mary, widow of John Hudnall, 1st, married (2) Edward Sanders by whom she had one son, Edward Sanders 2nd. After the death of her 2nd husband, Mary married William Thomas. No children were born of this marriage. Mary died circa. 1684. The Sanders book identifies her maiden name as Mary Webb. However, it seems more probable that her name was Mary Partain. " Early Settlers of Alabama ", p. 340 says: John I married Mary Webb; moved from Isle of Wright County, Va to Northumberland County, Va by 1655 and that she married (2) in 1660, Edward Sanders, b. 1625, will 1669/1672 in Northumberland County, Va, and (3) William Thomas (this per Roots in Va; 1948; Nathaniel Claiborne Hall), and received a land grant 24 Aug 1655 at Great Wicomico near the Island. No documentation for the Webb marriage is given and it seems much more logical with the son named Partain and the grandson named Partain, that she was a Partain. Perhaps she had married (1) a man named Webb. [Subnote to the above mention of John moving from Isle of Wight, England to Northumberland; it is recorded that John Hudnall bought 500 acres in North- umberland County from the Saffell of New England, 20 November 1655.] "Old Albemarle and its Absentee landlords by Worth S. Ray, 1976 Genealogical Publishing Company" -- Pg. 618: In 1637 William Dawson was described as a planter of Isle of Wight County, Virginia (Nugent, pp 116) and John Dawson, probably his brother; apparently lived in York County, neighbor to John Thomas and his brothers on Queens Creek (Nugent pp 134 & 204). Henry Dawson in 1658 was used as a headright by William Little and John Hudnall. The widow of Hudnall became the wife of Edward Sanders (Nugent pp 372) also Early Settlers of Alabama pp. 340. Records show that William Dawson was granted 1200 acres of land in the Isle of Wright County, Virginia adjoining the land of John Hudnall on Hudnall Creek in the year 1635. This was probably John Hudnall, Sr., and his wife Elizabeth for whom Hudnall Creek was named. It appears that John Hudnall, Jr., also had a brother whose name is not known at the present time.
