About the Project
The Hughes Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Hughes name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Hughes name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Hughes's), by time period (18th Century Hughes's), or by topic (Hughes DNA, Hughes Occupations, Hughes Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

I have two Hughes (a few Hughs spellings as well) surnames (30028) I am researching on my paternal side. My grandfather is Liga David Hughes and my grandmother Jessie Mae Hughes, Yes, my grandmother's maiden name is Hughes. Autosomal DNA testing limitations on GEDMatch reflect no relationship between my grandparents using my father's DNA and the "Are Your Parents Related?" in the GEDMatch tools.
My two Hughes lines have multiple generations beginning about 1840's in SE Alabama and W Florida in and around Holmes, Geneva, Coffee, Dale counties. I find ancestors of Liga David Hughes originating in South Carolina about 1785 and gradually migrating through Georgia to settle in SE Alabama and Holmes County Florida.
The ancestorial trail of my grandmother is much more clouded. I find great grandparents in Coffee County, AL and 2nd great grandparents possibly from South Carolina based on 1850 census in Alabama. With a very small amount of native American traits in my father's DNA, some family have always thought there was Cherokee or other native American traits in her line somewhere.
Would like to find someone with common connections to share.

I am currently researching my father-in-law's Hughes heritage. Specifically, I am trying to find substantive evidence that Jesse Hughes (Hughes-13841) is indeed the son of George Hughes (Hughes-1156) and Rhoda Garrett (Garrett-879).
To that end, I am also trying to hunt down a copy of "In Memory" by Alice Emily Hughes Barnwell Deavenport (born October 15, 1867; no Wikitree ID). My primary reference for this book's existence is a now-defunct webpage: https://web.archive.org/web/20180715011600/http://hughestree.org/blog/
Any information you can provide on where I could find a copy of this book or more about the author would be greatly appreciated. Any other evidence linking Jesse to George would be extremely appreciated.
Best regards, Patrick W. Phillips, Ph.D.

Love to hear from any who can confirm my records and particularly those that may be cousins even to extended lengths. I have extended links to various uncles and cousins as a result of research but none that are living. Robert Richardson, Western Australia [email address removed]

Born: 1936 Family linage include Ireland, New Mexico, Arizona , California, Kentucky and Missouri with names such as Hughes, Robson, Ellison, Morrow, Gregg. Armijo, Savaadra, Lurch, Anderson and Kyle
My however-many greats grandfather was Butler to Sir John Hill, 3rd Baronet of Hawkstone (Shropshire, England). (He was witness to Sir John's 1816 Will.)
The origin of Simon's daughter's name is a matter of curiosity to some of her descendants (I'm one of those who is curious), as we don't know if it comes from the Hughes line, or her mother's line of Marshall. (Tempest Margaret Hughes died as Paul.)
I also created a redirect, so Project:Hughes (the link for the button from the Hughes surname page) brings you to this page.
