1. Open the free space page for our categorization subproject at Space:Denmark_Project_Categorization_Subproject.
2. Choose an amt to work on and collect the information you will need to create a category page for it.
  • Scroll down to section 1.4.1 Amter (1662-1793) / Counties (1662-1793). Check the list to determine which amter have already been created.
  • Compare the list of amter which have already been created with the list at https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danmarks_amter_(1662-1793) . Choose one from the Wikipedia list which is not yet on the free space page.(Note: This step is being replaced by the spreadsheet available to members of the Project's Google Group containing information for creating location categories). These instructions will use Aalborghus Amt as the example.
  • Copy the name of the amt you selected from this Wikipedia page. You will need this spelling to determine the format for the category name. Then click on the link on the Wikipedia page for the selected amt to get to the page with more information on the particular amt you chose. (For example, clicking on Aalborghus Amt will take you to https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aalborghus_Amt )(Note: This step is being replaced by the spreadsheet available to members of the Project's Google Group containing information for creating location categories).
  • You may also use other sources for supplemental information on the amt you are working with as long as you take the spelling of the Amt's name from these Danish Wikipedia pages the spreadsheet (with the Å/å to Aa/aa modification from our guidelines) and the information you use does not conflict with the information on these pages in the spreadsheet. Be cautious of the English Wikipedia pages on Denmark. While some are excellent, others are missing or do not contain the information needed and the spellings and name formats on them may not match the standards chosen for our categories. (Note: This step is being partially replaced by the spreadsheet available to members of the Project's Google Group containing information for creating location categories. Make sure you copy the category names from the spreadsheet.)
  • The Danish wikipedia pages are more accurate than the English but are in Danish. If you do not read Danish, use Google Translate or some other online translator to translate the page so you can gather basic information about the history of the amt. In particular, for this group, look for the following information:
    • Geographically, where is the amt located in Denmark? Is the name of an island given? Look at the map on the amt's Wikipedia page if the location is not specified in the text of its Danish Wikipedia page. (Example: Aalborghus Amt was located in the northern part of the Jutland (Jyllands) peninsula just south the Limfjorden.)
    • Did the Amt exist for the entire period from 1662-1793? If so, your date range will be (1662-1793). If not, when was the Amt created and when was it dissolved? Substitute the year when it was created for 1662 and the year it was dissolved for 1793. (Example: The first paragraph on the Wikipedia pages describes Aalborghus Amt's history noting that it was created in 1662 from the southern half of Aalborghus Len and that it was abolished in 1793 when its herreder were included in Aalborg Amt, so the date range will be (1662-1793). )
    • What herreder did the amt include during the period from 1662-1793? (Example: Aalborghus Amt (1662-1793) included Fleskum Herred, Hellum Herred, Hindsted Herred, Hornum Herred, Slet Herred, and Aars Herred)
    • What amter and herreder from the period before 1662 became a part of this amt in the 1662 reorganization? (Example: Aalborghus Amt (1662-1793) was formed in 1662 from the southern half of Aalborghus Len.)
    • What amt was the area of the amt transferred to in the 1970 reorganization? (Example: The areas within Aalborghus Amt from 1662-1793 were transferred to the new Aalborg Amt from 1793-1970.)
3. Using the guidelines from Profile of How To Use Regional/Geographic Categories For Denmark And Explanation Of The Category Structure, compose an appropriate name for the category you are creating. As there are no duplicates in the 1662-1793 amter names, the format will be Category:Name Amt, Danmark (date range).
  • Make sure you use the Danish spelling of the amt's name and Danmark rather than Denmark. (Example: Category:Aalborghus Amt, Danmark (1662-1793))
  • If Å or å appears in anywhere in the spelling, remember to change it to Aa or aa.
4. Compose a brief description of the Amt to use at the top of the category page using the information you collected from the Amt's Wikipedia page or other sources of your choice as long as you are confident . Example -
During the period from 1662-1793, the country of Denmark was divided into several amter (counties). Although there were a few amter that did not exist for the entire period, Aalborghus Amt existed for the entire period. Aalborghus Amt was located in the northern part of the Jutland (Jyllands) peninsula immediately south of the Limfjorden. It was formed in 1662 from the southern half of Aalborghus Len.
From 1662-1793, Aalborghus Amt included Fleskum Herred, Hellum Herred, Hindsted Herred, Hornum Herred, Slet Herred, and Aars Herred.
In the 1793 local government reorganization, the area within Aalborghus Amt was transferred to the new Aalborg Amt.
