There was an outbreak of measles and whooping cough on board. The ship was designed for cargo so passengers' facilities were overcrowded and inadequately ventilated. Also a report of a child from the ship being admitted to hospital with diphtheria. At least six children died. There are numerous articles on the topic and the names of some of the victims are published. It created a lot of controversy.
