History

Isojoki (Swedish: Storå) is a municipality and parish in Southern Ostrobothnia (Etelä-Pohjanmaa). A settlement at Vanhakylä (red dot on the map) has been in existence since at least 1586 when it was noted in tax documents[1], although artifacts point to a long prehistory of settlement[2]. It became an independent municipality in 1855[2].

Prior to 1594, this region was part of Närpiö parish, and afterwards part of Lapväärtti parish[3]. In 1733, Isojoki’s chapel, after a community construction project led by Luukas Svartin[4], officially became the center of an independent congregation[3]. The church was rebuilt in 1833[4].
