Background
Italians in Haverhill was a book published in 2001 by Arcadia Publishing and was part of the "Images of America" series of books detailing the lives of Americans throughout the decades. "Italians in Haverhill" focused mainly on Italian immigrants and their descendants. Author Patricia Trainor O'Malley discussed how they forever changed the "Queen Slipper City" and the Greater Merrimack Valley.
The book explores Italian immigration by focusing on immigrants who first arrived in the 1870s to the 1920s and beyond. People came from all over Italy to work in mills and to seek a better life for themselves and their families. With them came their culture, music and close familial bonds.
Over two hundred photographs were used in the creation of the book and with them came the discussion of more than two hundred families from every walk of life. The pictures themselves help bring the names on the pages to life.
