About the Project

The Jacka Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Jacka name and its variants Jacca, Jackah, Jacke, Jaco, Jacco, Jackow, Jackka. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Jacka name and it's variants.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. researchers can participate as Individual or as team studies to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically Cornwall Jacka's, by time period, or by topic such as England Census for Jacka. These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Evolution of the Jacka Surname in Britain According to ‘The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland’ the Jacka surname is an English Cornish name “in which pronunciation of the final - e of Middle English and early Modern English Jakke is preserved and written as – a.” The entry also goes onto say that Jacko “appears to be a reinterpretation of Jacka” as a variant of Jack with the Cornish suffix of ‘o’ or ‘ow’ which could possibly be a specifically Cornish pet form of Jack.

The entry also identifies the following early bearers of the surname: John Jakke, 1480 in Cornish Lands (Lanherne, in Saint Mawgan in Pyder, Cornwall); Robert Jacke, 1499 in Cornish Lands (Winnington, Cornwall); Harry Jacka, 1571 in IGI (Gwithian, Cornwall); Richard Jacko, 1662, Samuel Jackah, 1766 in IGI (Kenwyn, Cornwall); Jtty Jaco, 1720 in IGI (Saint Allen, Cornwall).
