James Douglas

Given the current state of confusion of the various James', I have mapped out the relationships, as follows:

James Douglas (Douglas-409) is the son of James Douglas (Douglas-410) and Agnes Dunbar (Dunbar-914). Therefore, the current attached mother (Stewart-991) needs to be disconnected. Sources: Balfour Vol VI, pg 350 and Maxwell Vol I, pg 237.

James Douglas (Douglas-409) is the husband of:

  • Stewart-1633
  • Borthwick-25 (additional source: Balfour Vol II, pg.96)

Source: Balfour Vol VI, pg 350

The James Douglas that married Susanna (De Masterton-1) cannot be identified from the lone source provided. There is no corroborative evidence provided by Balfour or Maxwell. Therefore, this relationship should be disconnected. Source: Calendar of Scottish Supplications to Rome - 1428-1432

James Douglas (Douglas-409) and his wife (Stewart-1633) were the parents of:

  • William Douglas (Douglas-6419)
  • James Douglas, who succeeded (Douglas-411)
  • Henry Douglas (Douglas-6414)

Source: Balfour Vol VI, pg 351 and Maxwell Vol I, pg 236

James Douglas (Douglas-409) and his wife (Borthwick-25) had one son:

  • William Douglas (Douglas-5034)

Source: Balfour Vol VI, pg 352 and Maxwell Vol I, pg 237

James Douglas (Douglas-409) is the full brother of:

  • William Douglas (Douglas-822) (Balfour, Vol VI, pg 348)(Maxwell Vol 1, pg 232) should be connected to the correct mother, Dunbar-914. Douglas-630 does not belong to this family group.
  • Margaret (Maxwell Vol 1, pg 232), while Balfour says she's a natural (illegitimate) daughter (Balfour, Vol VI, pg 350). She married Philip Arbuthnott before 1372. Therefore, Douglas-2061 should be removed as a child of Douglas-409. Douglas-1820 is attached to the incorrect mother, but does not have a spouse stated.
  • Agnes Douglas (Douglas-811) (Balfour, Vol VI, pg 348)(Maxwell Vol 1, pg 232) should be connected to the correct mother, Dunbar-914
  • Jacoba (Balfour, Vol VI, pg. 348) or Jean (Maxwell Vol 1, pg 232), who married Sir John Hamilton of Cadzow. This child is not attached at all

James Douglas (Douglas-409 is the half brother of:

  • John Douglas (Maxwell, Vol 1, pg 232)(Balfour, Vol VI, pg 349) This child is not attached
  • James Douglas (Maxwell, Vol 1, pg 232)(Balfour, Vol VI, pg 349) This child is not attached

The mother's name is not stated.

All 'half' siblings attached to Stewart-991 should be removed with her.

  • Douglas-546
  • Douglas-3603
  • Douglas-630
  • Douglas-424
  • Douglas-588
  • Edmonstone-53
