Jamestown Colony Index

This Index is a work in progress. The goal is to index all WikiTree pages pertinent to the Jamestown Colony (1606–1625). Turns out there are lots (and lots and lots), and a lot of them need work to meet current WikiTree standards (such as category pages with in-depth articles included). So this may take a while.

You can help!

Let us know of a page that should be on the Index but isn't by posting the URL as a comment or in the "To be added" section.
If you are a Jamestown Team member and would like to "adopt" a page - be listed as the point of contact [POC] in the table below - post a comment as to which one or, if you're comfortable editing tables, add your name as the POC (and fill out the other columns).[1]

Notes

On any Category page, click the [Navigate] link at upper right to see current parent categories and subcategories, and category errors.
Ships: Category pages and space pages pertaining to ships that brought colonists or supplies to Jamestown Colony are in the process of being categorized under Category: Jamestown Colony Ships (see Comments, below for details). Only the Jamestown Colony Ships category is included in the following table. See below for a separate table of those pages[2] Note that Category: Jamestown Colony Ships is in both tables.
If adding to either table, add alphabetically by page type (aka namespace), alphabetizing on the first word (then second, etc.) after the colon in the URL. Do not include a space after a pipe (|), which will mess up sorting. Same with the date - use mo/day format (do not lead with "0"). G2G posts of note and Image pages are listed separately, above.
The Categorized column shows current categorization. If it is missing a category or has an inappropriate category, please post a comment about what changes are needed.

If the page is categorized under the Jamestown Colonists and/or the Jamestown Colony categories, those categories should be listed first, using the following coding:

[[:Category: Jamestown Colonists|Colonists]] & [[:Category: Jamestown Colony|Colony]],<br>
(deleting one or the other and the "&" as appropriate)

A number in the Date/Notes column is the character count of text on the category page on that date (under 50 triggers the "too short" error; for "too long" errors, see [Help] & Space:DBE_8061 [which defines too long as 20k characters or more]).

Footnotes

  1. Click here for notes that might be useful for a more detailed plan. Basic tasks for POCs are, for both Space pages and Category pages:
    • review their page(s) for accuracy and currency
    • coordinate updates with the Team Leader, Mary Richardson, and others as needed, and
    for Category pages
    • review to ensure they meet current Categorization Project guidelines (coordinate with the US Southern Colonies Categorization Team) and
    • monitor profiles and pages categorized under it to ensure it is used appropriately (for example, watch for people profiles being added to top-level categories, or people profiles from a different place or time being added to a landing-level category).
  2. The Jamestown Colony Ships table is under development still - the intent is to have it include the same categories and pages as on Category: Jamestown Colony Ships, serving to support both maintenance of the pages listed and as a quality control check of categories and pages that should be listed at Category: Jamestown Colony Ships.
  3. If the URL name and the displayed name are different, add a second line (using <br>) with the displayed name in italics.
  4. Not POC, but watching over page until there is one.
  5. 5.0 5.1 Landing-level category (for people profiles).
  6. Top-level (no people profiles) container category.
  7. 7.0 7.1 Text: "The town of Jamestown from 1789 to Now - Jamestown was the first settlement of the Virginia Colony, founded in 1607 (see Category: Jamestown, Virginia Colony). It is an unincorporated, census-designated place (CDP) in James City County, Virginia." Pages categorized to this page all appear to be intended for Jamestown Colony, except the person born 1706 (information as of 28 August 2020).
  8. Format grandfathered (mark category errors false).
  9. If the URL name and the displayed name are different, add a second line (using <br>) with the displayed name in italics.

Here is a semi-dumb question. If someone is not on the People or pages in Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestors (currently 188 profiles) or the People or pages in Jamestown Colonists (currently 103 profiles) lists, what does that mean? Are the wiki lists subsets of larger lists?

At least one of my ancestors (Henrie Lee Wilson (Wyllson)) is not yet connected to his daughter Mary with a wiki profile or any wiki profile. Another genealogical database has several sources showing him immigrating to Virginia in 1619. Before adding his profile I wanted to confirm him on some Jamestown list.

wow - I know I'm slow, but didn't realize it took me longer than 38 minutes to compose my reply to Jim's post! Thanks for the quicker response David :D

Not a dumb question at all, especially since Jamestown Team covers through the 1624/5 Muster (then Virginia Team takes over) but the Jamestowne Society's list of qualifying ancestors goes well beyond that.

Short answer to what you were actually asking... about Henrie Le Wilson (Wyllson). He is not a Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestor, although he may have immigrated to Jamestowne in 1619. Have you checked the Jamestown Muster for 1624/5, the Living/Dead list, and passenger lists (check the Jamestown Colony Ships category)? Check for him as an Ancient Planter too.

TMI Answer: My focus as a member of the Jamestown Team and the Virginia Team is on profiles of people listed by the Jamestowne Society as qualifying ancestors. I use this WikiTree page for "quality control" & primarily this list, posted by the Jamestowne Society as source for support to add the Jamestowne Society Ancestor Sticker. I say primarily, because if you click-through to the pages with individual entries you may find more (for example, one William Farrar is is listed on the main list, but two are listed when you click on his name & go to http://www.jamestowne.org/essington---fawcett.html (and the main list is not static - see the list of "new" qualifying ancestors at http://www.jamestowne.org/ where you'll also see links to newsletters, where they're announced).

So... the profiles added to the category Category: Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestors by the sticker for qualifying ancestors are a subset of WikiTree profiles, but it is likely that many if not most of the profiles in the category are in one (or two) of three categories (US Southern Colonists, Jamestown Colonists, Virginia Colonists)... or none of those. The category itself has several parent categories (listed at the top of the category page automatically & also seen in the Navigate view).

Hope that answered your question & sorry that I got "in the weeds" a bit :D

Cheers, Liz

Liz, I started the best Province of Carolina Quality Assurance over on Jamestown but to go very slowly. Betty Norman. I have concentrated on the emigrants/settlers and proving they belonged in Jamestown.

But did we ever decide what to do with the children born 1607-1624/25 in Jamestown as to whether we classify them as Jownstown Colony or Virginia? [MR]

posted by Mary Richardson
I think if they're in the 1624/25 Muster, they'd be Jamestown Colony.

Thanks for that Mary. The Jamestown Colony Index is not for sources. It is exclusively for WikiTree pages and categories pertaining to Jamestown. If there are ship categories on the index that shouldn't be, please let me know.

Thanks!

posted by Liz (Noland) Shifflett
Ships in the index have grown more than I had on the same page.

As I add the Jamestown sticker, several profiles are not good.

I am seeing a several Jamestown profiles, the leaders have put the Southern Colonies managed on.

I sent you an e-mail. Short version for anyone reading along:

- I'm still finding ship categories; still haven't found a couple of the ones Mary posted in the comments

- if a profile needs attention, consider adding a maintenance category - click here for details.

I've just started a new table on this page - see #Jamestown Colony Ships. It does not yet have all the category & space pages currently collected at Category: Jamestown Colony Ships, which is also still in process (meaning it does not yet have all pertinent category and space pages categorized to it). If you see a WikiTree category or page that should be listed in the index or category Jamestown Colony Ships, you can add a comment with the url here or add Category: Jamestown Colony Ships to the page (or both).

Cheers, Liz

You said you wanted to have Category: Jamestown Colony Ships to show up in Category: Jamestown, Virginia Colony. To do that, go to Category: Jamestown, Virginia Colony, click Edit, and add [[Category: Jamestown Colony Ships] (plus the 2nd ]) at the top of Category: Jamestown, Virginia Colony.
