Jasper Township was first settled in 1809. Jacob and Joseph Coile, sons of Gabriel Coile, came from Pendleton, Virginia and settled for a time before moving on to Indiana. Jacob Hershaw then moved on to the Coile claim. He, too, moved on to Indiana. Robert Burnett came from Virginia about 1810. A surveyor, he laid out many roads in the township. Jones Brooks was a Methodist preacher who arrived about 1811. Stephen Mitchell Irvin was among the first permanent settlers of the township and, in 1813, had built his first cabin. Jacob Rankin moved from Ross County and moved to where Bloomingburg now stands. John "Uncle Johnny" Coons married Hannah Jones and moved in to Jasper Township by covered wagon. Solomon Smith served as constable for the township for 34 years. William Furgeson moved into the township in 1842.
