Jimmie Skaggs Plantation
Jimmie Skaggs was originally from Kentucky. In 1854, with 13 enslaved people, he moved to Kansas Territory, intending to establish slavery there. By 1859, it had become clear that Kansas would enter the Union as a free state. Skaggs then took 16 enslaved people to Texas.
In 1860, Skaggs established a farm or plantation in Grayson County, Texas, and his enslaved people worked there for six years. Some people stayed on to work "on shares" after Emancipation.
