John Alexander of Clackmannanshire, Scotland

There's no proof that this John Alexander was born in Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, Scotland or any proof that he was the son of the Earl of Stirling. Date of birth not known.

Background: Scots in Ulster

"From the time of Elizabeth the English goverment was periodicaly plagued by the native Irish who were antagonistic, combative and often lawless; constantly demanding freedom and selfgorverment. During the reign of James l, a Protestant ruler, --He concieved the idea with populating the counties of Ulster, in the North of Ireland, with a different nationality , charasteistics and, religious creed. Consequently, in 1610, he confiscated vast tracts of land in Ulster: disposessing the owners and banishing them from that large area. Ulster was parcelled out in large tracts to certain Proprietors, who were largely English or Scots. [3]

One of these was the Scot, John Alexander whose descendants have been fairly well established -- some of whom finally migrated to this country and ultimately settled in the Shenadoah Valley area.[3]

Descendants of Lord John Alexander

One story states "It is believed that the descendants of Lord John Alexander went to America to Virginia. It seems that the descendants of another John Alexander (John of Eredy) of Donegal Ireland who also went to America were confused with the descendants of Lord John Alexander's descendants. ..... Lord John died in 1667 and his son Hon. John in 1677. " [9]

Per WikiTree member David Hughey:

I think there is some "garbage" in the books about John Alexander s/o the Earl of Stirling and a Miss Grahame. I've e-mailed descendants of John s/o the Earl who say that John Alexander and Miss Grahame never left Scotland, never were in Ireland, and certainly weren't in the US. Their family always lived in Scotland. I'm descended from John Alexander of Eredy and he and his son may have travelled to the colonies, but they didn't remain there. My immigrant ancestor was Andrew "the immigrant" Alexander, one of their descendants, who left County Tyrone for Virginia. A Colonel John Alexander did colonize Virginia earlier, but how he fits into the Alexanders of Tarbert and Menstrie is debatable. Lots of John Alexanders in those days tried to connect themselves with John s/o of the Earl because of John's disappearance. I'm sure some of the information in the First Alexanders in America is good, but some of it doesn't ring true. It's only my opinion. The Alexanders of Tarbert sold their birth right to the Barons of Menstrie, so the barons took over as clan chiefs of Clan McAlister whereas the Captains of Tarbert had been the clan chiefs beforehand.

Thank you for your efforts to clarify the John Alexanders! I am looking for the parents of John Alexander (1757-1831) of Alexanders Corner, Hanover County, Virginia. Does anyone have a copy of the book: "John Alexander : a Northern Neck proprietor : his family, friends, and kin", by Wesley E. Pippenger and/or information regarding the ancestors of this John Alexander (1757-1831)?
