This page has been accessed 185 times.

The goal of this page is to compile information related to the (parental) family of Sophia Woodruff, née Boughton. I am Austin Woodruff. Sophia is my great great great grandmother.

I think I understand the story of Sophia's family, but sources are sparse and there's not a single person or source linking everyone together. Instead of posting this information on several individual pages, I thought it made more sense to create a single page where the story could be told and perhaps expanded or corrected.

Timeline

  • 1780s: John and Polly are born[2][3]
  • 1805 - 1824: John and Polly marry. A later date would explain why they didn't start having kids until relatively late in life (41 and 37 years old at their first child).
  • 1824 - 1832: The family is living in New York when all their children are born.[3][8]
  • 1832 - 1845: The family moves to Summit County, Ohio.
  • 1845: Sophia marries Nelson Woodruff in Bath, Summit County, Ohio. Her maiden name is given as Boughton.[9]
  • 1848: John dies and is buried in Copley, Summit County, Ohio.[2]
  • 1850: Sophia (now Woodruff) is living with her husband, two children, and a boarder in Bath, OH.[8] In what appears to be the house next door (houses 162 and 163), Polly Boughton is living with Elmer and Levi.[3]
  • 1850 - 1860: The family moves to Calhoun County, Michigan.
  • 1860: Sophia Woodruff is now living with her husband, three children, and a different boarder in Athens, Calhoun County, Michigan.[10]
  • 1863: Polly dies and is buried in Kalamazoo, Michigan (just west of Calhoun County)[4]
  • 1864: Elmer gets married in in Kalamazoo, MI.[7]
  • 1889: Sophia & Nelson's son Ralph gets married in Athens, Calhoun County, Michigan. Instead of "Boughton", Sophia's maiden name is listed as "Ewers".
  • 1890: Elmer dies and is buried in Kalamazoo, MI.[6]
  • 1894: William Boughton gets married (at age 70) in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. His birthplace is New York, and his parents are listed as John Boughton and Polly Ewers.[5]
  • 1905: Sophia dies and is buried in Athens, MI. Her father's name is listed as John Boughton.[1]

From Ancestry.com

With temporary access to Ancestry.com, I found some new sources and information:

  • John's will, which is difficult to read, but which at the very least confirms his wife Polly Boughton and the fact that he has several children.
  • Grave records of soldiers from the War of 1812, which say John's first wife was Sally Roat and his second wife was Polly Stimson
(https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/21163/images/dvm_LocHist007160-00004-1?ssrc=&backlabel=Return&pId=6)
If Polly was John's second wife, it's possible that Polly had also been married before, perhaps to a Mr. Ewers?
  • An 1840 census record from Bath, Summit County, Ohio for John Boughton, which included 10 total people in the household.
While records from that year only give the name of the head of household, the ages and sexes of the family match John (57), Polly (53), William (16), Sophia (13), Elmer (10), and Levi (8), as well as including four others:
  • Another boy between the ages of 5 and 14 (depending on whether Elmer was counted in the 5-9 or the 10-14 category)
  • Two more boys between the ages of 15-19 (3 total including William)
  • A young woman in her 20s.
  • There was a "John Bouton" born in Fishkill, NY on 28 Dec 1785. His father was also named John, and his mother was Elizabeth Roberts. The record was for his baptism in April of 1786.

Other Possibly Relevant Information

  • There's a Levi Boughton living in Brant County, Ontario, Canada around that time, who's a possible match for Polly's son. He would have moved there at age 18 in 1851, around the time when the rest of his family moved to Michigan. Thirty years later, in 1881, he was living with his wife and five children. The census lists him as Welsh and a Congregationalist. He died there a couple of years later in 1883.
  • There are other Levi Boughtons in New York around the time he was born, but they appear to all be heads of households: 1, 2, 3.
  • Celia L. White (née Boughton) was born in New York in 1823 and died in Michigan, not far from Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. Her father was named John Boughton, but her mother was listed as Susan. It looks like she had a brother named Elon.
  • Lucius Boughton was born in New York in 1833; his father's name was John. In 1860, he was living in Savannah, Ohio. By 1900, he had moved to Bowling Green, OH (closer to Michigan), where he died ten years later in 1910.
