Beginning in 1825, Jack Smith, acquired extensive land holdings in Mississippi and later in Texas. Many of the land purchases in Scott County Mississippi were from sales conducted by the Sheriff or Tax Collector for that County.

A full list of Bureau of Land Management General Land Office Records is attached to this page as BLM GLO Records John J. Smith. Forty-Nine records are included on this list and each includes a link to the original document. Some of the records include Choctaw Certificates that were assigned to John J. Smith by Choctaw Indians. It has not been confirmed that there was not another John J. Smith in Mississippi at the same time who received some these assignments.

In 1860, after he had had moved to Texas, a Bill of Chancery was filed by him to confirm title to lands purchased at tax sales. Bill of Chancery was filed under an act of Legislature dated 10 Feb 1860.[1]

  • 1825 10 May - John J. Smith of HInds Co., Mississippi issued land patent for 80 and 4/100th acres of land in Hinds County.[2]

    • 17 Mar - Conveyance made of 20 acres of land by Moses Thomas, John J. Smith, John Beard and Hugh McDaniel of Scott County to Shadrach J. Deuson, President of the Board of Police for Scott County. John J. Smith signed as agent in fact for John Beard and Hugh McDaniel. Consideration in the conveyance is, "...location of the Town of Hillsboro, the county cite in and for said County and the advantages accruing to us by reason of said location where it is now established, as well as for the benefit of the said county..."[5]

  • 1841 06 Jul - Conveyance made of 10 acres of land by John J. Smith and wife, Margaret to Isaac Carr, President of the Board of Police of Scott County. Consideration in the conveyance is, "...location of the Town of Hillsboro the County site in and for Scott County and the advantages accruing to us by reason of said location which it is now established as well as for the benefit of said County..."[7]
  • 1842
    • 07 Mar - John J Smith purchase of land from Jeremiah B. White, Sheriff, Scott Co., Mississippi. Land was formerly owned by William B. Smith and had been the subject of a suit filed against him by William McDaniel.[8]
    • 06 Oct - John J. Smith purhcase from John and Delilah Dunn of 560 acres of land in Soctt Co., Mississippi. Conveyance was subject to a mortgage held by Mississippi Union Bank.[9]
