"John L. Lear, died at his residence two miles east of Cooperstown, 21 May 1881. Mr. Lear in the 73 years of his age. Another hearthstone has been visited by the pale-face reaper, death, and another aged sire has been borne away from hearth that would rejoice to have kept him on earth during their own lifetime.

"Mr. Lear was born in Franklin County, Pa, 11 Feb 1809, and in the year 1828 was married to Miss Maria Richardson and settled in Bedford County Pa, where he remained until 1854, when he emigrated to this state and settled in this county where he resided till his death.

"He professed a hope in Christ in 1842 and united with the Church of God of which he remained a member until he came to Illinois, after which he united with the Baptist Church of Cooperstown, IL, which membership he held till his death. He was the father of eleven children of which eight survive him. His aged consort in her dotage has our heartfelt sympathy in this the darkest hour of her life. On the morning of the 22, services were held by Elder H. L. Johnson at the residence of the deceased, after which a large concourse of his sorrowing relatives and friends followed him to his last resting place at the Cooperstown Cemetery."
