Background

-1-
John Lougee, Sr. served in the Revolutionary War according to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)'s website. [1] They give his birth as circa 1722 in Exeter, New Hampshire and his death as 1811/12 Gilmanton, New Hampshire. They also name three spouses:

  1. Molly Leavitt
  2. Susan Hull
  3. Judith Beal

This record undoubtedly seems to represent John Lougee (1719-1794). But did he serve at upwards of 55 years of age? Was it his son, John? Or his nephew? It is known for sure that his nephew served since his widow received a pension. Just for fun, her name was Molly. But more research has to be done to determine which man served in what capacity and during what time frame.

The problem lies in that surviving military records are not sufficient to prove his service, at least on a cursory level. There were a number of John Lougees who served during the War for Independence, and from New Hampshire! Previously, the DAR did not examine membership applications as stringently as they do today, so they have put the warning on this ancestor's page that:

FUTURE APPLICANTS MUST PROVE CORRECT SERVICE

This ancestor record had only one descendant who applied for membership. The line of descent was:

John Lougee born c. 1722/23, died c. 1811/12 and 1st wife Molly Leavitt (m. 1745)
