There's a Geni tree with minimal info: https://www.geni.com/people/John-Metcalfe/6000000035575747574

His grandfather is supposedly James William Metcalfe (1850 Glasgow, Scotland - 1919 Armidale, NSW) (FindAGrave page, BillionGraves page) and on Geni it's mentioned that James' father (John Patrick's great-grandfather) may be the James Metcalfe (1824 - 1887) who died in the Bulli Mine Disaster. There are no sources provided for that claim but worth researching. Rennie-1211 04:38, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Per the Singleton Argus of 26 March 1887[1], Metcalfe was "not in the mine, as was first supposed, ...."

Testimony of Mr. A Long, 10 May 1887, Royal Commission, Page 36[2]:

52. I suppose you are aware that Davy lamps have been used for some time by a faction of the men at Bulli? Yes.
53. Do you know how long they have been in use? I cannot say how long, but I know that they have been used in the gassy section since it was opened out.
54. That was sometime before the strike? Yes.
55. Who used to clean and light the lamps? A man named Metcalf did before the strike.
56. To whom was that duty delegated after the strike? I do not know that there was anyone.
57. Was no one appointed to that duty after the strike? Not to my knowledge.

James William Metcalfe (1850–1919) and his wife are both at Find A Grave: Memorial #248978634[3] Ms Susan Jennings Metcalfe Find A Grave: Memorial #248978612 has an extensive writeup on her FG page, which lists three sons J.W., R., and L. as possible fathers for J.P. Metcalfe and also names her parents.

Ancestry.com lists the parents of James William Metcalfe (1850–1919) at https://www.ancestry.com.au/genealogy/records/james-william-metcalfe-24-1lnf7dl "Born in Glasgow Lanarkshire Scotland on 1850 to James Metcalf and Mary Anne Ophel.
