Biography

John Rose was the son of William Rose of Wye.[1]

His year of birth is not known but estimated as 1430 as he was probably circa 20 years old when he participated in Jack Cade's Rebellion in 1450.

John married twice:

1) unknown and had children:

  • William Rose[2]
  • Thomas Rose[2] who married Agnes[3]
  • Alice Rose who married John Serlys[2]

2) Agnes who was a widow. Her previous husband was John Andrew. No issue with John Rose mentioned in the will of Agnes Rose written 1511.[4]

Jack Cade's uprising 1450:

The manifestor of the uprising, the 'Complaint of the Commons of Kent', called for political reform. It found much support amongst the gentry and developing middle class, including the Abbot of Battle Abbey (who owned the Manor of Wye). After Jack Cade's party defeated royal forces in Sevenoaks they occupied London. Negotiations led to the Complaint being accepted and pardons issued. Those pardoned on 6 July included one John Rose of Wye. [5]
