Biography
The Johnson-Neel Plantation began in 1826 when William Cook Johnson purchased 61 1/2 acres from Alexander M. Hughes and James McKnight for $160[1]
In 1828 William purchased another 170 acres was added to it for $800 from John Johnson of Columbus, NC.[2] William built his home there on that property between 1828 and 1835. It is known today as the Johnson-Neele house.[3][4]
William Cook Johnson died intestate about 1855. At his probate[5] his wife was named as Margaret M. Johnson.[6]
Slaves
William Cook Johnson had a number of enslaved persons when he died. They became the property of the heirs of William Cook Johnson.[7]
These enslaved were hired out 1 Jan 1856:[8]
In May of 1856 these enslaved were divided up during the division of property.[9][10]
