Leaders

Our Mission

The Johnson name exists in many countries around the world. You cannot automatically tell where your ancestors came from if your surname is Johnson or one of the many variants.
It is our mission to help distinguish by documentation the various Johnson lines, making it easier for members to find their Johnson ancestors. We also aspire to keep abreast of research that sheds light on some of the mysteries of this surname.

How to Join

  1. One Name Studies project page - Check out how the project works here!
  2. Contact your leader Paula J to have the One Name Study badge added to your profile.
  3. Add one_name_studies to your list of followed tags. That way you'll see all our discussions in G2G.
  4. Add Johnson to your list of followed tags. That way you'll see all our discussions in G2G.

Anyone who wants to try to trace a Johnson line back more than a few generations, especially to the time before detailed censuses were taken, will find himself soon overwhelmed by the duplication of names and scarcity or inaccessibility of information to separate them. The surname "Johnson" is the second most common name in the U.S., only "Smith" being more common. Furthermore, many foreigners have used Johnson to Americanize or replace their original surnames. There are Irish, English, German, Dutch, Swedish, and many other Johnson lineages. The best one can do is keep his eye open for "markers," such as distinctive first names or middle names. In written records, there is often a confusion between "Johnson" and "Johnston," with many families changing back and forth between both.

Clary-1861 I would like to join the Johnson ONS, I have a line that I would love to work on

Hi Paula and Eric. I would like to join the Johnson Name Study Project. William Right Johnson (abt.1871-1943) is where I am stuck. I have researched many Johnson families in Obion Co., TN to try to rule out or rule in any connection. My Johnson lived there for about 20 years that I can verify. I have already been sharing my research with WikiTree by adding my unconnected Johnsons. Thank you for considering me.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I am looking for Johnsons originally from Scotland, but who eventually settled near the Turtle Lake area of Saskatchewan, Canada. I am trying to match one of my ancestors with that of a 3rd cousin who shares a paternal haplogroup with my father (adopted).
I have added Sarah (Johnson) Haven (1773-1836) to the project. She is a major brick wall in our family as she is the earliest known member of our direct maternal line (for mtDNA testing; believed to be mtDNA H16a1). If any Johnson experts who specialize in the New Hampshire/Vermont area during colonial times are able to suggest possible parents, that would be greatly appreciated.

She was born in 1773 in Chesterfield, Cheshire NH, and married Elijah Haven there in 1795. Their first daughter was born there, while their children born from 1797 onwards were born in Halifax, Windham, Vermont - where Sarah died in 1836.

I would like to add my great grandfather to the Johnson One Name Study, #73426. I also want to know if this is the proper place to add a "looking for other descendants of Huntington's Disease" memo? Martin and many of his descendants suffer from HD.

Hi Paula, I think I need to bring to your attention that the 2015 Johnson web page that was recaptured by "Way Back" may be in violation of the recently adopted privacy protection all testing companies are wary of. I am Sherrie. Lee Mark and I were responsible for this web page. FT asked us to take it down, then they used "way back" and put it back on public results. We made them take it down. We had pedigrees linked to named living descendants, and those are still visible, I just checked my group. "Apple". I would like to join this project and am quite familiar with the various groups since that was my responsibility in our JJJ project. Thanks for your attention. Sherrie Mitchell-17863

Hi Paula - I'd like to please be added to the Johnson Name Study Project. My mother's father's line is Johnson of Suffolk, England. We also have a 2nd Johnson line. Oddly, I match Johnsons from Scandinavia yet show a very low % of British ancestry, as does my half-sister. Thanks much.
