In 1864 Joseph Jephson (1789-1865) penned a statutory declaration, deposing to details about the family of his parents Richard and Mary (Halton) Jephson. The following is a transcription by Sarah Bell in 2021 from a copy provided by the University of Nottingham's Manuscripts and Special Collections:[1]
Page 1:
I Joseph Jephson of Sutton in Ashfield in the
County of Nottingham Hosier Do solemnly and sincerely declare
1 That I am 74 years of age and upwards.
2 That I am one of the 8 only Sons of my Mother Mary
the Wife and afterwards the Widow of Richard Jephson late of
Sutton in Ashfield af[ore]s[ai]d Framesmith deceased and who before her
Marriage with the said Richard Jephson was Mary Halton
Spinster ^ & was the elder daughter of Joseph Halton late of Sutton in Ashfield af[ore]s[ai]d
Framesmith deceased.
3 That I have often been told and verily believe that my
s[ai]d Mother and my Father the s[ai]d Richard Jephson were [?]
married at the Parish Church of Sutton in Ashfield af[ore]s[ai]d on
the 15th day of December 1785 and that they had issue 8 Sons only
and no more viz: John (who died in infancy) Joseph ^ (this dec[ease]d) John,
William, George (who also died in infancy) Henry, George Halton
and James.
4 That my said Mother ^ who survived my s[ai]d Father never married again after the his decease
of my s[ai]d Father & that she died ^ intestate in the year 1819[?] & was buried
in the Parish Church-yard of Sutton in Ashfield af[ore]s[ai]d on or about the
8 day of Febr[uar]y 1819.
5 That my s[ai]d Father & Mother had a family Bible in which
my s[ai]d Father entered ^ the date of his Marriage with my said Mother the
^ dates of the births of all the Children of my s[ai]d Father & Mother & also the

^ the dates of the deaths of such of them as died in the lifetime of my said
Father.
6 That such Family Bible remained in the possession of my
said Father & Mother during their lives and upon the
decease of my said Mother (the survivor of them- the same
Bible was taken possession of by my Brother William Jephson
late of Sutton in Ashfield af[ore]s[ai]d Gent[lema]n (now deced) and is now
in the possession of his the Children [?]
7 That I have carefully examined the Entries made in the
s[ai]d Bible and the following are correct Extracts therefrom and
which are [?] entered therein in the following order.
"Rich[ar]d Jephson & Mary Halton were married Dec[embe]r 13, 1785"
"John Jephson born June 29, 1787"
"Son of the above"
"Joseph Jephson born July 29, 1789"
"John Jephson born Jan[uar]y 30 1791"
"W[illia]m Jephson born April 8, 1794"
"George Jephson born Oct[obe]r 3, 1796"
"Henry Jephson born Oct[obe]r 8, 1798"
"G. H. Jephson born Jan[uar]y 12, 1800"
"James Jephson born May 12, 1805"
"John Jephson died Nov[embe]r 26, 1789"
"George Jephson died January 11, 1799"
"Sons of Richard and Mary Jephson"

"John Jephson died June 6th 1823 aged 32 years"
8 That I have been informed and verily believe and [?]
of the above extracts support such information and belief that
the said John Jephson ^ who was born June 29th 1787 being the first
Son of my said father & mother died on the 26th day of
November 1789 and that the said George Jephson ^ who was born Oct[obe]r 3
1796 being the fifth son of my s[ai]d Father & Mother died on
the 11th day of January 1799.
9 That ^ my brother the said John Jephson ^ who was born Jan[uar]y 30, 1791 being
the third Son of my said Father and Mother intermarried
with one Mary Frances Gill at the Parish Church of Saint
Nicholas in the Town of Nottingham on 13th day of October
1818.
10 That my said last ment[ione]d Brother John Jephson to the best
of my knowledge information and belief never had but two
children viz: Caroline Mary who was born on the 5th day of
September 1819 and who is now the wife of Anthony Bell of
Belper in the County of Derby Grocer and Charles Jephson who
died in his infancy.
And lastly I declare that my said last mentioned
Brother John died at Nottingham on or about the 6th day of
June 1823 and was buried in the Parish Church-year of St

Nicholas in the Town of Nottingham aforesaid ^ and that his s[ai]d wife Mary Frances Jephson died on or
about the 18 day of March 1860 and was buried at Belper in the Co[unty] of Derby And further that
I was always informed and verily believe that my said last
ment[ione]d brother John died intestate.
And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously
believing the same to be true.
