Here us a transcription of the last will and testament of Joseph R Hudson of Union County, North Carolina.

State of North Carolina - Union County

I Joseph R Hudson of the county and state aforesaid being of sound mind and memory, but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence, do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say:

1st that my executors herein after named shall provide for my body a decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends and pay all funeral expenses together with my just debts howsoever and to whomever owing out of the moneys that may first come into his or their hands as a part or parcel of my estate.

2nd I give an devise to my beloved wife Ann M Hudson all of that tract of land whereon I now live containing one and fifty acres more or less. Also a tract of land known as the Tomberkin Place containing one hundred and fifty acres more or less. Also one other small tract adjoining the Tomberkin Tract said small tract being purchased from William Hudson containing twelve or more acres to have and to hold to her the said Ann M Hudson all of the aforesaid tracts of land for and during her natural life in satisfaction for and in lieu of her dower and thirds of all my real estate also all the growing crofts that may be on said lands at my decease.

3rd I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Ann M Hudson all my household and kitchen furniture of every description, three head of mules, one Sorrel mule 7 years old, 1 black mule 8 years old, 1 iron grey mule 7 years old, three milk cows and three yearling calves, fifteen head of hogs, two wagons and [gears?], one buggy and horses, one set of blacksmith tools, all my joining tools, one cotton gin and press all the provisions on hand at my death and all my books.
